I'm not sure how much you can tell from these small images. This is a sharp, fast lens with good contrast.

Brick wall wide open (f/2.8) at 70mm.

You get a nice, 3D effect with large aperture lenses.

And finally, a self portrait.

The first shot is my 28-105 at 55mm in macro mode, the second is my Nikkor 60mm micro. The 28-105 was shot just before the 60, neither used flash, so I cannot explain the washed out look on the 60mm shot.

From what I've researched, the Tokina 28-70mm is great. I've seen reviews that say the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 is a little better. I'm trying to find the Tamron lens for my F100.

If you want a great lens for the Digital, check out the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8, if you need the wide angle...

Here is a sample of the 17-50mm 2.8 wide open at 38mm:

Nikon did make a 28-70 f2.8 lens. Some places, it's called "the beast" because of its size and weight. But it has a great reputation and takes great images. I recently picked one up from another Forum member and am just beginning to experiment with it, but already can see it will become one of my favorite lenses.

Depending on your subject matter, VR might not be an advantage over a larger aperture. Case in point is moving objects (i.e. sports). VR will not help you stop motion blur from the subject moving. It will help with the photographer shaking from a slower shutter speed.

I shoot Nikon and can tell you that the 28-70 and new 24-70 are simply outstanding lenses. I know they are expensive, but I can go out with my 24-70 and 70-200 and cover pretty much all I need (remembering I shoot people. Usually ones that aren't moving).
