WTB: 28-70 f2.8 or 24-120 f3.5 VR for Nikon d50. - 01-22-2008, 02:45 PM

I'm just starting to look around for this lens, or something relatively similar.

Basically I want something with a little bit of a zoom, and with great performance under low-light situations. Hence the f2.8 or VR/IS.

While I'd prefer buying Nikon brand, I'd be open to 3rd party companies, provided they have a good track record. I'm not a professional photographer, but would like a gently used lens that wouldn't mind finding a good home to be used for years to come :-) I could care less about surface wear & tear, as long as it doesn't affect the glass. I'm also not going to set a price range, b/c I simply don't know what these go for.

Educate me, oh smart TFP folks!

Apparently, you're asking for something that may not exist. Here's the closest in the Nikon catalog.

You can get 2.8. You can get 105. You can't get 105 and 2.8.

Edit to add: At least not in the same lens. 2.8 zoom lenses either stop in the 70mm-85mm range or start in the 70mm-80mm range.

Well, that's just silly, if you ask me :-)

Seems like there would be a decent demand for this lens. A good friend of mine just got a 28-135 f2.8 IS version for her Canon, and it's a *gorgeous* lens. I figured Nikon would have the same.

Any thoughts on whether a company like Sigma would have an equivalent? I'm new to the lens-buying community, so I don't know if they even match up quality-wise.

EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

If you like this lens, SWITCH!

Canon has this: EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

BUT! I had the 24-105 f/4 lens in my hand last Saturday. It's HUGE!

Are you sure that 28-135mm was 2.8? I can't find it anywhere...

Maybe it was the 28-70mm 2.8

The Canon 28-135 IS isn't f/2.8

Ah, now I've done it.

Upon further discussions with my friend, turns out it is an f3.5-5.6, as folks here guessed. Bummer.

Too bad your friend bought already, there's a really nice one for sale right here.

Upon further searching, my original statement is correct: 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8.

I totally agree with you: A 24-105 f/2.8 IS/VR lens would be totally AWESOME! It would be HUGE!, but awesome.

I know! Talk about a nice well rounded workhorse of a lens!

Ok, well, going back to the original (if slightly modified) question.... WTB either a 24-70 f/2.8 or something with a bit more range but IS and f3.5... I figure with the IS I can shoot at slower speeds, thereby partly making up for the lack of 2.8.

Keep in mind that a f/3.5-f/5.6 lens is only f/3.5 at the wide end. It gets to be f/5.6 in a hurry after you start zooming from the wide end.

The 28-105 is such a good lens that he wouldn't miss 2.8.

Also check KEH. They have a multitude of lenses and most likely one that fits your needs.

Jesse, I have this lens in a Nikon mount: Tokina AF 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro II

It is in excellent plus condition (probably closer to mint) and has all the original accessories. Box, paperwork, caps, hood and soft case. You can have it for $275. I'm in Houston too btw.
