Hey, I wished my Nikon 400 2.8VR would have been somewhat in that price range or even that of the 400 2.8 IS.
It cost me $8k plus and I still cant believe I spent that much for a lens.
IMO, if your gonna shoot sports, then the 400 is the ONLY way to go. Not saying a 300 w/ 1.4x is not good, but there is a bigger difference than most realize. I shot with a 200 1.8 & 300 2.8 IS and loved both of them until I fell in LOVE with the 400.
That made my divorce alot easier and I then realized it was only lust. Since then, my 400 still sleeps with me. :)
