SmugMug: How to Customize your SmugMug site! - 02-15-2008, 04:49 PM

OK, there are many people on this forum that could really use customization help so I will try and make this as simple as possible. www.moonriverphotography.com was designed by Andy Williams who works for us and he is an advanced user. Here is another example: http://www.photoscapedesign.com/ Everything done on these sites have been done on SmugMug and I can help most people get something fairly similar quickly.

1st: you want to make sure you have a Power or Pro account. Those levels allow customization.

2nd: you need to find where the "Customize" tab is in the "Control Panel". Make sure you are logged into your account and you will see the customize tab in the control panel, click it.

3rd: you will see a customize link inside the customize tab, click it. Don't let this page scare you, it looks intimidating but it is easy.

4th: Inside this page, you put any customization on your site. Mainly if you know how to Copy & Paste, you can get some key customization instantly!! Lets start with a slideshow on your SmugMug homepage, you can do this!!

Try copying this tutorial exactly with your own site: (note we have screen grabs to make it easy) http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/3624147

Did you do it? If not, what went wrong? How should I tweak the tutorial?

5th: now that you are done with that, try putting a Banner & Navbar on your site by copying and pasting this code and coming up with your own links: http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/2160039

Note: if you tell me where and what is confusing about the tutorials I can fix them!

Try these steps first. They are going to do wonders to your site! If you have any problems post back here or PM me directly. I will put you in touch with one of our customization gurus if it gets to be too much for you.

Thanks!!

Markham

My site is a customized Smugmug site too. I learned it all from the Dgrin forums. That's a good helpful bunch of people.

Thanks for the info Markham...

Ive been working on mine a bit here and there and I can see where people can spend a ton of time customizing the site in order to get it just right. It's like moddin' our myspace pages.. hehe

It's cool that you guys give us that ability

hehee.

Definitely good stuff. I have my SmugMug completely in tune with my website. Pretty much seamless integration.

Hey your links in your header are not working. Here is the link to your "contact us" http://www.clubflys.com/contact.php

Have you put the correct URL ID for those links?

Yep, they all work except Calendar and Discussions. All the rest work.

Dammit. I could have sworn I fixed those last time. Thanks for pointing them out. It looks like I left out an important part of the URL.

Thanks again!

I really want to make some changes to my Smug site, but I have to tell you I think I would do a lot more harm then good.

I would like to get a front page going that looks something like this
http://pitprincess.smugmug.com/

Here is what I have now
http://stevecurtisphotography.smugmug.com/

I am at a complete loss when it comes to the terms and such, I have read countless threads in the forums but as soon as someone starts speaking in codes I'm lost.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to make changes in plain English?

Hey, I'm all for discussing it over some BBQ, but have you actually LOOKED at my site?

Nope. It's the plain stock site. I keep talking about customizing it, but I never get anywhere.

I have a 3rd party customization guru that can whip this out for you extremely fast. So, are you willing to pay a little? If so what is your budget? I have customization people that range between $250 to $2000.

Let me know and they can start working asap.

I'm going to have to read the forums and just try to figure it out. No way I can pay anyone at this point to do my site for me. I'm just hoping I don't screw it up to much in the process.

Thanks for the response Markham
