Bag recommendation please - 06-09-2009, 08:51 AM

I'm looking for a small travel bag - something I can lug around in the city that will be slim and not draw attention. It needs to hold a D300, Nikkor 17-35, 35-70, 50mm, and SB800. Room for the flash isn't necessary, but would be nice. Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Try the Think Tank Glass Taxi. Good bag, and should carry what you want. It's a backpack.

I use the Lowepro SlingShot 300 AW for travel and walking around.

I'd recommend a Domke - I only have a big 'un, but some of the small ones are pretty low profile.

Both of those look great. I'm actually trying to look for a bag similar to what a courier would wear (off to side). Anything like that?

Take a look at the Lowepro Classified series. They kind of look like messenger bags and come in black (which some find boring, I like the stealth factor).

Or if you really don't want people to know you're lugging around fancy camera equipment, toss it all in a Hefty Cinch Sak.

The Classifieds are nice and understated.

To clarify on Domke, the shoulder bags are more what I meant:

Thanks, that's exactly the type I wanted (not the cinch sack haha).

Haha - Well I already have a backpack, but I wanted something smaller for city travel. Not too large, but room enough for what I wanted to carry. Also it would allow me quicker access to the camera.

My g/f did mention that it looked like a 'man purse' and I sort of agree. Oh well, I'm really going for functionality then looks.

Tom, you nailed it - I don't want to draw too much attention walking around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQs7wKhTnp0 check out this vid.... I think that it answers some of your concerns. I bought one of these because I was going to travel to NYC but the trip had to be cancelled. I still have the bag, with the tags on it... maybe one day I will have the opportunity to use it, or maybe I will just sell it. ( I usually keep my stuff in pelican cases)

I have this one for travel. IMHO, it has THE BEST way to access your stuff without removing the bag. Check out the vid for the demo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mmbk2lamHCI

I have the 300 and the only thing I don't like is the side pocket is too small/tight.

But the ease of use and being able to swing it around giving you FULL access to ALL your gear and being able to work with TWO hands as if you took the bag off and layed it down somewhere is awesome. And because it's a true two-strap backpack it's more comfortable than sling bags or shoulder bags. The sling bags don't give the access that these do, either.

I still think the slings and backpacks draw more attention than a messenger bag. There are a million people running around NY with messenger bags, so rummaging around in it doesn't seem unusual. A few companies make them. I've got the Tenba.
