Rolling Backpack or Rolling Camera Bag w/laptop holder - 06-26-2009, 04:56 PM

I have just booked a trip for Italy and have time to order a bag to hold all my photo equipment I am planning on taking. I will be getting a bag which will also hold my laptop. I am taking a 5D Mark 2, 50D body, and my Sigma 150-500, Canon 28-135mm and my 60mm macro, also a speedlight flash. My question is do most people prefer one type of bag over the other and which works better as far as placing in an overhead bin? I appreciate any input or recommendations on type of bag to go with. I just new with the Sigma 150-500 I'd need a larger bag.

I have a wheeled Delsey bag, which would hold all that and a laptop. But, depending on where you are going in Italy, a wheeled bag may be a PITA. Venice, for example. I like the Delsey because you can take the insert out and use it as a regular bag and it does not scream "photo gear inside." But, there are other ones that have come out since I got mine, like the ThinkTank bags, which seem pretty nice.

One thing about rolling backpacks is that the wheels and support for them adds a ton of weight. Add your gear into that equation and see if you'll ever actually wear it as a backpack. There are a lot of nice ones, but make sure you can carry it comfortably when fully loaded. The non-backpacks might have more room.

Stateside I use a shoulder bag coupled with a roller bag.
I've been to Europe many times, and my bag of choice is a well made backpack.
A backpack can hold plenty of photo gear, and other personal stuff.
You see them on locals and tourists a lot, and they don't scream out "expensive stuff here".
I like the Victorinox (Swiss Army) line for durability and ease of use.

Thanks, yeah, that was what I was thinking, so it's not so conspicuous as a camera bag. I'll check out that line, thanks for the advice.
