Need to invest in a new bag/case - 08-11-2009, 10:18 PM

Okay, my lens lineup is getting ready to expand by 2 and I'm going to be in the market for a new case. Probably going to go for a roller unit. It needs to accomodate:

1 - Nikon D3
1 - Nikkor 200-400 f/4 VR
1 - Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR
1 - Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8
1 - Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8
1 - Nikkor 50 f/1.4
3 - SB800 flash units

Thoughts? One of the first ones that jumped out at me is the Lowpro Pro Roller 3. Anyone have any experience with this bag? Any others that might fit the bill?

Where are you going to be going with the case? A Pelican might suit you, I think the only barrier you'll hit is fitting both the 200-400 and 70-200 in one bag.

What comes to mind, a Pelican 1650 would be able to do it with room to spare, maybe the 1510 (but doubt it).

And don't forget to check out Cambags, great user reviews and pictures!

I've been using Lightware for about a dozen years now, and love them. http://www.lightwareinc.com/site/index.cfm

I also have Lowepro products, and Pelican, and a company I consider to be a sleeper - Crumpler. I don't think Crumpler makes rollers though. Also www.thinktankphoto.com - for their lineup.

One thing I consider is the empty weight of bags.

Buy.com has the Lowepro Pro Roller 2 for $190...
FREE SHIPPING

Edit:
I just bought one.
I will likely be selling my Tamrac roller bag soon.

Edit2
found it HERE for $20 cheaper ( buy.com buys it from them and marks it up $20)

notified that it shipped out today.
I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow so it'll be ready for me when I get back.

That's when I'll decide about putting the Tamrac up for sale.

I think this might fit the bill. The neat thing about it is that it goes from backpack to roller and back... I have the Tenba Shootout medium backpack (no wheels) and I am happy with it.

I was reading a post on dpreview and a person posted up a link to porter cases which appear similar to Pelican cases and has a handle which extends perpindicular to the case itself to use as a cart.

Tarick! I knew I'd run into you eventually. Sweet backpack/roller bag, btw.

Okay, just went to Arlington Camera and bought the Lowepro Pro Roller X200. This thing will hold everything and the kitchen sink. Lots of very cool features, too. One of the neatest touches is that it comes with a way for you to mount your camera to the bag handle. Not meant to replace a tripod, but a very handy way to stabilize your mount in a pinch if needed. Overall, very pleased and would highly recommend.

Glad to hear you like the x200 LowePro. I am also thinking of buying this case, or the x300 for the added size. How is the construction quality of the case? For me it's come down to the LowePro or the ThinkTank, though I have to admit I'm LowePro biased, having several of their backpacks.

Never looked at the ThinkTank so I cannot compare the two units. The Lowepro seems to be very solidly built and should hold up for years.

Is the X200 the one you ended up getting? Choosing a bag always causes be to blow a circuit. Too many options. LOL

Yes, I bought the X200. Got it at Alrington Camera. So far, loving it. Can't wait to see how it accomodates my 200-400 (when it comes in).
