Lens case for prime shooters - Adorama Slinger Lens Case review - 09-14-2009, 09:06 PM

I often use 3 to 4 different primes when I'm on assignment ,so I really need something that can help me swap lenses quicker. I was looking at the thinktank modular system, which is really nice but the price can adds up pretty high and probably equivalent to a really good camera bags. One day when i was at check out for this "usa universal strap" http://www.adorama.com/GBSAS.html?searchinfo=USA+strap , they suggest to purchase with the Adorama slinger lens case for about 9-13$ each depends on the size. I added them in the cart right away. http://www.adorama.com/GBSLCS.html?s...a+slinger+case

The cases fits my 35mm and 135mm perfectly, now all i need is somekind of belt that is similar to thinktank "belly dancer" and attaches all of them on my belt when i'm on assignment. There is double padding inside for smaller lenses below 72mm diameter. Some lenses with 86mm diameter might not fit in there. I test fit the 6.5" high case with canon 24 -70 2.8 and it fits nicely ( with out hood). Talking about the hoods, if you plan to use hood on your lenses probably these cases will be too small for you. The thinktank ones will be better choice for you. I rarely use hoods for my lenses may be
with the 135L but not the others though.

I usually prefer to keep my gear steath in regular messenger bags to prevent attention from other people so these cases are perfect to protect my lens in a regular "un-padded" bags .

The good thing is it comes with belt strap behind the lens case so i can attach them vertically or horizontally depends on where you want it on the bag's strap or on the belt.

The pictures says it all. For the price, this thing really rocks compared to 'higher end" thinktank stuff which is larger in size and more expensive. The thinktank modular system is more for all weather -professional use but for a amateur shooter, these lens cases really fits the budget . I actually ordered 4 of the 5" and 1 of the 6.5".

The belt from most belly bags/fanny packs slip right through these types of cases. I have one that I bought at Target in the travel department and it has been one of the best purchases ever. I put one lens holder on either side of my fanny pack and then the fanny pack holds my memory cards, speedlight, triggers, batteries and other personal stuff. It's been a great hands-free set up for me. I like that I can spin them around to the front when I need to access them, then push them to the back when I need to interact with my subjects.

I don't think I would ever trust my lenses to case where the strap is closed with just velcro. An accident in the making....

These look pretty cool. I like that you can remove the extra padding.

Is there some way to attach it, other than velcro? I see the little tabs near the zipper. Are those loops that I could put a snap hook into? I'd like to be able to snap a couple of these to a thin strap and carry it over my shoulder.

Depending on the costruction, you could probably put a heavy-duty snap in the middle of the velcro. I've used some cases like that that never had any problems with coming loose accidentally.

If you don't care about having the velcro part at all, a lockstitch awl and a bit of Spectrafiber fishing line will make it the strongest attachment on the case pretty quickly.
