I have an old Pelican 1500 case that I rarely use. Today I tried to shove a ton of stuff into it for a short little jaunt around town. I got everything by the vertical grip in there...
Nikon D700
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8
Nikon 85mm f/1.8
Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR (Micro)
Sigma 50mm f/1.4
Wow! Credit the iPhone for the crummy (albeit convenient!) photo.

All of this for a "short little jaunt around town?" LOL Good grief, man, that's going prepared!

No doubt.... I'm just looking for something to carry 2 d50's, an n80, and a few lenses. Haven't really found anything that jumps out as "that's it" that doesn't cost about $200 or more.

Scott & John:
LOL. It's funny because the 14-24mm capitalized 100% of the time. I never even opened the case. I thought for sure I would at least try out the 50mm Sigma... but nope... all 14-24mm.
Rich: Let's go shoot. You and I have the same stuff bro! Let's plan to go out on the boat in the Spring too!

Scott: I was just thinking about that... I left all of the gear in the car except for the 14-24mm and the D700. I've been on the crappy end of the car break-in so it's not as funny as people might think... but I understand the point-of-view.

Wil, take a look at the Airport Ultralight if you find yourself needing a new bag. I picked it up specifically because it fits inside the Pelican. For day to day use it's a decent sized bag that works as a backpack but for travel/transport it fits inside the Pelican where I know it is pretty darn safe.
In mine I usually carry Mark III, 5D Mark II, 70-200, 24-70, 17-40, 580EXII and external battery pack, 50/1.2, Honl grids, spare batteries for the cameras, Think Tank CF wallet, 2 Pocket Wizards, TTL cord and a few other little odds and ends. I have flown with this and had to gate check on a few occasions and I never worry about damage. Loss maybe, but never damage...

Pete,
Thank you for the feedback. I wasn't considering that one but since it will fit inside the Pelican I may need to put it back in the running.

Pete,
Do you have to lay the 70-200mm down or can you stand it up like "normal" lenses? I would really like to have a bag where I can stand the 70-200mm up. It just takes up a lot of space laying down.

Nice set of glass, although too redundant to carry that much around. I'd just take the 14-24 & 70-200 to lighten the load :)

Viet,
I could've lightened it even further... since I didn't even use anything but the 14-24mm. If it wasn't brand new then it may be a different story.

Wil, the 70-200 has to lay down in about any bag that will make it as a carry-on so I think that becomes a limiting factor. As you can see, I can get quite a bit into the ultralight and it has become my primary bag. (Pay no attention to the crap iPhone snap) With this I can do about 90% of anything I could need in most situations and I can easily adjust the contents to fit the day's needs. I love that I can put it into the Pelican because it makes it easier to secure at a wedding and weather is a non-factor.
I have been using this over a year now and it is holding up great, no problems...

Thanks again Pete! I don't see the 85L f/1.2 in that bag!

- Wil | That's what the crop factor on the Mark III is for!
No, really it is was case of the fact that I tried both and the 50 was the focal length I chose to go with first as it is a tad more versatile for my needs at this time, but who knows what tomorrow will bring! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
