Suggestions on a good vest - 03-16-2010, 11:52 AM

Hey I'm from Ohio, and planning a trip to Texas in April. The trip wont be specifically for photography, but I will be doing a good amount of atleast bird viewing while I am enjoying the senery. I've been looking at several photo vests that I liked, I think I've settled on the humvee version, but I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on this photography vest or on any others?

I sometimes use a 5.1 tactical vest. The smaller lenses fit in the front pockets and the mid range lenses fit in the water bottle pocket on the back of the vest. An SB-600 fits in the radio pocket.

It's not really a vest but take a look at Think tank photo modular sets with harness.
I have skin set and it's really nice all around

The only one I have ever used is the 5.11 and it is a great all around vest for everything including photography. But it is solid cloth (no mesh) so it can get hotter than others if that is a concern.

+1 on the Domke Photogs Vest. I only use it for very specific applications where having a modular belt kit (I have the Think Tank which rocks) is not practical.

One of the best available is made right here in Texas at Denton.
Check out Vested Interest. These are custom made to order. So you have to allow some lead time for John to build it.

The Humvee photo vest my kids gave me for Christmas has one failing, shared with most other vests, I think. The bottom pockets... where you store all the heavy stuff...lenses, flashes, and the like, are too low. If you are leaning against a guardrail or crash wall, like I am all the time, the stuff gets crunched between your bod and the hard thing. Even my go-to fishing vest was guilty yesterday, because the wall was really high.

They do look cool, tho,(see the prior thread regarding cool photo equipment and photographing naked ladies) but a Ferrari would, no doubt, help, too.
