Tamrac bags?? - 03-19-2010, 10:51 PM

What do you guys think about them? I was looking at the expedition 5x for 139.99 + shipping and I was wondering why are they so expensive?

They are great rugged bags that hold up well to abuse and protect equipment along the way.

but...

Once they show signs of failure you would be best to heed the warning and ditch them.

I had a tamrac backpack that I rode exceedingly hard for 4 and a half years and stuffed it to the gills. At the end of the 4th year the zipper on the main compartment seperated one time (the actual zipper closure - not the seams) I dismissed it as a missed connection, but from that point forward within the next two weeks it opened two more times. One of those times resulting in an extender rolling across the parking lot.

I had a minor problem (mainly asthetic with fraying around a non support seam) about a year ago that I called tamrac about. They immediately gave me their address to send it back to them for warranty repair with no questions asked -- so their customer service is excellent, and they stand by their gear. I have not sent my backpack in for this latest issue (as I replaced it immediately with another bag)

I do not know the particular bag that you are asking about, but I would definitely recommend tamrac if it fits your gear.

Well Son let me tell you the facts of life.

When a photographer buys a lot of expensive equipment he wants to find a nice
safe place to put all that stuff so he can whip it out when the opportunity presents itself. He could go to the All For $1 store and buy a canvas sack, but that doesn't make much of an impression with the ladies. It's important to impress the ladies because the ultimate goal in photography is to take pictures of ladies without their clothes on. In order to make the best impression you have to have sexy cameras/lenses/camera bags. Sexy camera bags can also be very practical, but they come at a hefty price. But one of the best parts is they come with cool names like expedition, streetwalker, 5 million dollar home, etc.
What cool lady can resist a guy who keeps his equipment in a 5 million dollar home? Mention the name of your bag and the size of your equipment and voila, off come the clothes and you will be posting in Human Form in no time.

Spend the money. It'll be worth it in the long run.

Lol funny reply up there ahaha I'm glad to hear they have good warranty. I really like that expedition 5x and I'm sure I can fit it all in the 4x but I see the 5x on cameta for the same price. I suppose the time will come when I have more equipment to fill it up.

I recently bought a Tamrac bag and I haven't seen a naked woman yet. Oh, wait. I'm married; I haven't seen a naked woman since the birth of our last child.

I bought a Tamrac bag about six years ago in Europe ( I think I was in Prague at the time) when my other bag broke. I needed a good bag fast, and this one did the trick. The Tamrac is still holding up. I use it a lot and stuff it good. They are high quality...

With that said, most of my bags are Tenba, and I love Tenba stuff! They are just as expensive, if not more. Good bags aren't cheap.

camera bags are like the holy grail.... it's a lifelong quest to find the 'perfect' one...

My husband got me the Lowepro 300 for Christmas year before last....and it was definitely like Tom said....without the posting in the human form section of course...

I don't carry a laptop when I shoot - so I didn't need the laptop option...but I absolutely LOVE my bag....I just had dinner with Anthony (tessai4) & his wife Friday night and he has the same style bag, but the 200....and he wishes he'd gone with the 300...of course... I' 5'6" and he's 6'5".... but it'll fit my D80 with the 80-200 and slots for 4 or 5 other lenses, place for cables/extra batteries/etc..etc.

Oh, Grasshopper, you have come far but have so much to learn. No serious photographer can have just one bag.

I have just two right now, a "hold everything I use regularly+laptop+kitchen sink" bag and then a much smaller one for one body+long zoom or one body+two small primes. I've been wanting a small backpack, too, for times when that would suit my needs best. Both are Lowepro and I like them very much.

I've also used Tamrac (great) and Tenba (pretty good) bags. A good bag will take you far, a bad bag won't.

Enjoy it, Franklin. You'll find that $140 really isn't that much for a decent camera bag, particularly if/when you start looking at another one down the road.

I think I definitely will. I'll be starting chemotherapy really soon and while I will be hospitalized during each course during the time I have in between each course I hope photography will be the one to help me get up and walk around. As I can't stay in bed and need to resume normal activity I will probably won't be able to do anything streneous; so walking through a park with my camera seems ideal :)

I love tamrac bags, but a heads up.. watch out on used bags, tamrac has a bad bad habit of reusing the same model number even after major changes to the bag...
