Dessicant? - 01-04-2011, 03:54 AM

I carry my cameras and lenses in a Lowepro bag, and I am wary of the effects of high humidity on the equipment. I live and shoot in Brazoria County for the most part, so close to sea level and often very high humidity.
I have several bags of dessicant that came in some computer shipments, and wonder if keeping one in the bag would be worthwhile?

If the bags have been exposed to the air, they have probably absorbed all the moisture they can.
I have one of these: Amazon.com: Reusable desiccant canister: Industrial & Scientific Left in the open air it saturates within hours. Best for a very small air tight container.

Air conditioned/humidity controlled environment with air circulation is going to be your best bet. My office equipment is stored outside any bags or containers in an horz. file cabinet. Some of the lenses are 25-30 years old and have no mold problems.

Surely they can be dried out?

On Google, I get conflicting thoughts, so I guess it is not a good idea.

There are some that are designed to be dried out and reused. Get the ones that are reusable and go for it.

When we go to humid parts of the world I use a bag of instant rice, the boil in the bag kind. Cut it in half, and take a lighter to melt the edge back closing it. I also keep a full one in the bottom of my gun safe and rotate out every once in awhile.

Works brilliant and have never had a problem....
