A question for the group: Do you carry a gadget bag in addition to your camera bag? I've found that most of the time I only need a camera bag, but other times I need more storage for an external flash and other accessories. Just curious how much baggage a "typical" photog hauls around...

Not that I am a pro, but I just got a backpack to carry all my goodies. Not that I have a lot of things to put in it. Since I carry a backback for my laptop when I travel on business. I guess I am use to it.

i have a backpack made for cameras. it holds almost everything i have for my camera and for cs2 in case i want to upload pictures away from home. 3 lenses, camera, flash, manuals, you name it. and since its a backpack is convenient to take where ever you go. people at work always ask if i'm going back to high school. if they only knew what was inside.

I have the Lowepro Stealth Reporter 650AW. It holds all of my lenses, Laptop, two camera bodies, charger, CF cards, batteries, and manuals. Depending on what I am doing I will either load it up or take equipment out. No need for another bag with this one.

I have the Tamrac 752 Super Photo Daypack loaded up. I carry 7D, 800si, Dimage 7, 5600HSD, 5400HS, Sto-Fen. 17-35 2.8, 28-75 2.8, 75-300 4.5-5.6, 70-200 2.8. Batteries (Li, MH, AA) & chargers for everything, AC & auto adapters for everything, cables for everything, filters for everything, caps, hoods, cleaner kit, mini-tripod, manuals for everything, 8 CF cards(7.5GB) and I have room when needed for a S-VHS-C camera and the U212 tripod (but probably wouldn't hang it off the bag unless I was on a long hike and needed it). The bag also has a band to slide it over luggage handles for transport. Could possibly be used for a laptop also. When loaded up, definitely need to use the chest and waist straps.
Doubles as work out bag.

I get everything in a Micro Trekker. For me, carrying less weight makes photography more enjoyable. Lighter is better....especially as I get older.

Well, I'll be different. I do carry a gadget bag unless I'm flying with photo gear.
In it I carry: Small niddle nose pliers
Wrench for my Gitzo tripod
Lens cleaning materials
A set of jewelers screwdrivers
Allen wrenches for my Arca Swiss lens plates and body L-plates
Battery chargers
Sensor cleaner
Small flashlight[headlight]
Rubber bands

Rubber bands | Yeah, that sounds similar to my setup... I'm probably over-prepared 99% of the time but I like being able to do field repairs when necessary, or go from one type of shoot (e.g., landscape) to another (e.g., indoor flash photography) without heading back home to replenish my gear. I'll probably drag less stuff around as I get more practical experience and learn to get along without it.

Well I sometimes carry a gadget bag like if I am setting up a remote camera I have a seperate bag for the safety cables, remotes, magic arm, clamp.. .etc etc...
For example
University of Houston Basketball game
My Lowepro Compu Trekker on my back
Rented 400 2.8 w/ monopod over my shoulder
Gadget Bag on my shoulder with pocket wizards, safety cables, gaff tape, superclamp, magic arm, gobo....
Big plastic case with two strobes
Light Stand Bag
I shot this picture before I packed up for the game, basically I had all that stuff minus the two old cameras
My back hurts just thinking about it :-P
I probably should have made multiple trips, but I really don't like leaving any equipment in a place without my supervision.....

With only taking one body, the flash, and maybe 6 of 9 lenses, my Tamrac bag is filled. The big problem I have is with the lens hoods, starting with the huge hood for the Canon 70-200 f/4 L. I have been carrying them nested in a drawstringed bag I hook on my main camera bag. Those two bags can't hold all the lenses, the battery charger for the rechargeables I use in my flash, a tripod collar, Stofen Omni-Bounce and my backup 10D body. So there is a problem with gear, but I don't want to carry two larger bags.
