I use the Tamrac CyperPack 9 to carry my laptop and camera gear everyday. I think it's thicker than it needs to be, but it serves it's purpose. I'd suggest going to local retailer (if there is one in your area) and try your gear in various backpacks until you find one you like.

The larger LowePro backpacks have the best harness system, if you're planning to load up a lot of gear and carry it for long that can make a big difference in comfort/stability. I have the LowePro Photo Trekker II AW and the Dry Zone 200. The Photo Trekker is the pack I use when I want to carry a large kit, and also what I pack my stuff into when traveling. It's a very well-made pack with an adjustible harness system and heavy duty belt (and thanks to the longer length, the belt actually goes around your waist rather than the middle of your stomack like with most camera backpacks).

If you go with LowePro, search for an ebay seller named photococan. He's an authorized LowePro dealer, but he's in Canada so his prices are much cheaper than what you'll get from B&H et al (LowePro is a Canadian company). There may be other dealers on ebay but he's the one I know of, I bought my DryZone 200 from him (wish I'd known about him when I bought the photo trekker).

I am looking to carry my D70 and couple extra lenses and flash unit. I am looking for something that will allow easy carry and also easy access. My current bag puts all the weight on one side and then makes it slow to get to the camera.

Take a look at Moose Peterson's photo backpacks at...

They are strong, yet light weight, and very customizable.

The lowpro mini trekker is a good one for that list of stuff.

also easy access.
Well, IMHO there's no such thing as a backpack that allows easy access, because you have to take it off your back to get anything in/out. That's why when I'm carrying a small enough kit I prefer either a sling-style bag (Tamrac Velocity Series, LowePro Slingshot series), or a belt with pouches (such as systems offered by Kinesis, ThinkTank, and LowePro). The only time I'll use a backpack for actual outings is when I'm carry a large kit, in the 20+ pound range. Other than that the backpacks are more for storage or travel.

I just checked him out since I'm looking for one of those bags. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the PHoto Trekker. He's got the Pro Trekker at $265 - B&H is $319. This bag, unfortunately is too big for carry-on.

I've got the Crumpler Brian's Hot Tub and really like it. I'm actually surprised at how much I stuff in it, but the Photo Trekker can pack even more. I'm torn between the Photo Trekker and a wheeled bag.

I have A Tamrac Expedition 500 And I travel ALLOT it's carry on size and have never had any grief with airlines here in the states or Europe.

I like it but as allready mentioned a backpack is just that and it's not exactly easy access.

I was looking for the LowePro 5AW and checked with Price Grabber, and found it cheapest at Digital Foto Club. They have great service, but they don't always have everything in stock.

You can also just buy a good backpack big enough to put a small camera bag in. Lighter, better selection, good fit, and your camera bag is what you are used to. Makes it easy to carry other supplies, too.

A dedicated photo pack is good for heavily padded, partitioned carries. What you get depends on how you are going to use it. Gulf coast or fishing, maybe something waterproof. Big Thicket, ballistic nylon or Kevlar.

LowePro and the bigger Tamracs seem to be the most popular. Go to a store, load them up, and try them on for comfort. I know that in the Dallas area, Competitive and Arlington Camera have good selections, including also Tenba.

I have the computrecker and love it. My only complaint is that there's really no way to get into the bag without setting it down to open it up. With other style bags, you can usually leave it slung on your shoulder while getting stuff out of it instead of setting it down in the mud.

I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.
