I think you'll be OK, they have a thin candy shell. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

I just recently 'upgraded' from using a $14.00 lap top vertical messenger bag from Target (so sad)...to the $99.00 Lowepro SlingShot AW 300 and love it. Holds my D1x w/ 80-200 attached with additional compartments for lenses, flash, etc...I'm able to keep my hands free but still have quick access to my camera if need be. It comes in other sizes too.
Just go to www.adoram.com and type in "slingshot" in the box on the top left hand side of your screen. It'll list the four Lowepro versions they carry.

I second the LowePro MiniTrekker AW. It is the size of a normal backpack and will not attract attention. I ususally carry a D2 series body, couple pieces of glass, flash and video camera with no problem. There is also a pocket on the front which allows you to carry a tripod.

i used to have the Canon 400EG bag to go wih my XT with about 5 lenses and a flash. worked great. i didnt find it to big (in fact not big enough), but of course now i carry a Lowepro Pro Trekker AW II, which is a monster. i think the 400EG will be a good bag for you. amazon is the cheapest place i found for it when i got mine.

I've got a really nice backpack made by Roots that I need to sell. I bought from Henry's in Canada about a year ago, and it's been sitting in my closet for the past 4 months (I got a Lowepro Mini Trekker to hold more stuff). It's 11" wide and 13" tall and will hold a lot of gear. I can sell it for $35 if you are interested. Some pictures of it:

Houston Camera Exchange has a bout 300 bajillion different bags on hand to try out. I got a Naneu Pro for notebook/camera.

The Nanue Pro looks like that Roots bag (above) in the camera section, except that it comes out so you can remove all of the camera gear at once. The camera section (the pull-out part) has a separate zipper seal and handle.
