Is there a 'preferred' method of putting lenses in a backpack/bag? Front element down, base down, or does it really matter. For the lenses that have movable front elements it seems that putting it with the base down would cause less stress on the assembly. Currently have them all with base down. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I have always put mine in base down. Can't say if it is right or wrong, but it just seems natural to me.

I've never given it any thought, but I put all my lenses front element down.

When I use Think Tank gear, the lens mount is up for accessibility.

I always put them in front element down, mount up. It's easier to get them in that way, and easier to grab them and get them out.

Wich way do you install your toilet paper? Paper comes over the top in front or droops down from the bottom in the back? I like mine to come over the top in the front so I don't have to hunt for the end, lol.

Mount down for me. My theory is that the mount is stronger than the objective end if the bag is dropped.

If a rock is going to fall on your bag - lens down.
If your bag is going to fall on a rock - lens up.

Mount down because in a tight compartment they are easier to slide in and slide out.

If a lens will fit up/down, I always put it front element down because it makes it easier to change lenses for me.
When I change lenses, I do it in this order...
Put lens cap on the lens that's on the camera.
Loosen the back cap on the lens in the pack (much easier to do if it's standing up with the back cap available.)
Remove lens on camera and stand it up in the backpack with back element at top.
Take back cap off lens to be put on camera and put it on the lens I just took off camera.
Put new lens on camera.
Snug back cap on lens I removed and stow lens in the bag where I want it.
