It may be time for a new backpack - 10-24-2007, 01:14 AM

So I start trying to sort out how I'm going to organize my Tamrac Expedition 5 backpack mow that I have 2 new camera bodies to put in it. I used to have a 70-200 2.8L mounted to an XT and a Sigma 17-70 mounted to another XT. I always left the lenses on. I also have 2 580EXIIs and a few small things in some holes. Now I have my 70-200 mounted to a 30D and replaced the other XT with a 5D/24-105 4L combo with a battery grip. I was hoping to leave the 5D totally intact with the grip and all but I don't think that is going to work. Even with the grip off it's a tight squeeze getting that gear in there. Anyone else have a similar setup and if so what bag/backpack are you using?

Here is what i use. I can fit an incredible amount of gear into it as well.

I have:
1D
20D w/ Grip
580EX x 2
24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
50 1.8
85 1.8
Battery Pack for lights
Wireless Slaves
Air Rocket
14" Laptop
Chargers for everything...

I think that is it, but that is just in the main compartment...the pockets on the top and outside of the bag is a whole other list. I keep the 70-200 on the 1D all the time, the 20D goes in its own compartment, along with everything else. The setup looks basically the same as the BH website image with exception of a few pieces of gear being different.

Hopefully that helps, and if you want any more information, let me know

I have the same backpack.
I use it only for traveling. I've found that my Tamrac shoulder bag holds more (except the lap top) and is easier to use.
On a recent trip to Colorado I took the backpack, but left out most of the "extra" stuff I carry when I am not traveling. It was light, comfortable, and easily fit in the overhead.
I like Tamrac quality and value.

Thinktank Airport Addicted.....

I doubt any one who has bought one of these has ever had anything bad to say about them. I think this thinktank is about the same size as the expedition 5, maybe slightly bigger (not enough to be significantly bigger though).

Mine used to hold 1Ds+17-35, SLRc+24-85, 5D+70-200, 580EX Mk II, 580EX Mk I, 50mm f1.2L, two batteries for each of the bodies, 8 AA batteries for the flash units, 4 filters, and still had room to fit adapters in. It is rugged and will definitely keep the gear safe and dry if you ever decide to walk in a light rain. I think you can get them for around $175-$200.

I'm sure you have the 20D with the 70-200 in the middle slot. Do you take the lens off your 1D when you put it up? I would really like to leave my 5D kit intact so I won't have to worry about dust and the time to assemble it each time I use it. By looking at the pic I think this could be possible. Maybe I need to go to the local shop and try one out if they have it.

The biggest problem I am having is the depth of the 5D with the grip on it. I am with Martin..I like to keep two cameras, both with a lense on them...28-70 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8. Just that takes up my camera case, Then I have to carry my two flashes seperate, not a good deal. And my husband complains about the weight of the backpack all the time....Guess I should do something also...
