Looking for a new bag (big suprise huh?) - 01-10-2008, 10:47 AM

So I'm a self admitted bag whore second only to our fearless leader Abel and its time for a new bag. I'm sick to death of carrying 3 bags a day to the office so its time to combine the laptop and camera into one. So we're talking 15.4" laptop, 1d series with 70-200 attached (not required but it would be nice), 24-70, 15mm fish, 50mm, 2 flashes, and the misc stuff we all carry. Let the suggestions roll, only thing it has to be is either messenger or backpack, never again on the slingbag for me.

Lowepro Stealth Reporter D500AW. I actually think the D400 would be fine for everything except the laptop, but the D500 adds a laptop sleeve as I recall. Also the D400 is tall enough to accomodate a gripped body attached to the 24-70L with hood in place, but I don't think it's quite tall enough to be mounted to the 70-200 f/2.8L. The D500 may be tall enough for that, I'm not sure. I looked at the Urban Disguise bags, but they don't seem to be oriented towards keeping your camera bodies mounted on lenses at all which I didn't like. That's for messenger type bags obviously.

You use the side pockets for your flashes right? Ever got em banged up there in normal use?

Yes - CP-E3 in "forward facing" pocket and flash in "rear facing". Never had a problem. But those bags are deceptively large.

For my trip to Tampa, I used my UD40 (no laptop compartment) to carry:

- 5D with grip
- 24 f/1.4
- 50 f/1.4
- 85 f/1.8
- 580ex
- CP-E3
- Holga lens
- Bose headphones in case
- iPod
- PDA
- cell phone

Me personally, I currently have what looks like the equivalent of the tamrac cyberpack 8 (I am pretty sure mine is an older model) and it would hold all that you mention.

But I would like to get a different one, mainly looking for a roller, and from what I could find, it looks like the best deal is on a tamrac 5552 speed roller http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...2_Rolling.html

The thing looks like it could hold everything that I own, all while remaining carry-on comopatible.

Curse you for getting me looking at bags again!!!!!!!

Just FYI, here's what I was able to load the D400AW with this past weekend (I just got it):

Rebel XTi + Grip mounted to 24-70mm f/2.8L (hood in place)
85mm f/1.8 (hood reversed) stacked with 50mm f/1.4 (hood in place)
16-35mm f/2.8L II (hood in place) OR 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (hood reversed)
580EX II speedlite
Elan 7NE + Grip
430EX speedlite

Plus whatever it was I threw in the outer compartments, as far as accessories. I'm definitely liking it. Everything seems much more secure than it was in the Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home, and it's a bit easier to work out of.

I've had my eyes on a Vertex 300 bag from Lowepro.
It has enough room for everything I have (including QFlash and turbo 2x2 battery) and my 17" MBP.

What I liked best was that the chest straps are long enough for a big fat guy like me. Makes it very comfortable to wear.
When I'm home, I prefer a shoulder or roller bag that doesn't need to be "carry on" able.

I've gone through 3 backpacks in the last year, a couple Lowepros included, looking for something to carry the camera stuff, computer, and my other business accessories, like pda, ipod, leatherman, etc.
Right now I'm using a Naneu Pro U120 that I got at Precision Camera here in Austin for only $99.95. You might check into it. 15.4 Powerbook, two camera bodies, 4 lenses, flash, light meter, and all the other accoutrements. The camera gear compartment actually totally pulls out of the pack if need be. Waterbottle holder on one side and tripod rest on the other.
