Where to Buy Desiccant - 02-01-2008, 11:16 AM

I'm getting ready for one of my usual trips to Viet Nam, but I thought I would do something to protect my equipment this time. I had read, and a Vietnamese photographer had also recommended, that I put cameras and lenses in a Zip-Loc bag at night, and throw in a couple little bags of desiccant. I had a camera go belly-up on me 2 years ago due to the extremely high humidity (as well as a laptop computer) and thought this might help.

My problem is - I can't find desiccant except the little bags that come packed with new camera equipment. Anybody have any ideas?

Any gun shops down there, most of the decent one sell it. You might also try Home Depot and Lowes

Doug, You can order it via uline.com (http://www.uline.com/Group_21.asp?se...rds=desiccant). I am sure there are other places as well.

Don't you need to run this stuff through an oven to dry it out once in awhile?

ship your stuff over in an airtight case (or get one there) and at night, put some DriZAire (calcium chloride) in a pillowcase and put everything in the Pelican case for overnight.

You can get DriZAire for $20 or so for a 3 pound bag at rv and boat supply stores, or you can get calcium chloride granules (exactly the same thing) for about a buck a pound at a chem supply house.

you might see if it's available abroad, that way you wouldn't have to pack a bunch of chemical with you. customs might be skeptical if you bring in pounds of dessicant, depending on the length of your stay.

You can go to PayLess (or walmart, or anywhere that sells shoes) and ask if you can have a few packets. All the shoeboxes have the ones in little paper pouches that I keep in the bottom of my Domke. Ask though...

Look for the kind that - thru color change - will show when they are saturated. But be prepared that doesn't take long in humid conditions.

I'm still looking for a photo mag. that had an ad for a desiccant pack the you would plug-in to the wall outlet when it needed to be recharged. Maybe someone might know who makes it.

I tried Remingtion but they just did not last. Then I tryed Eva-Dry and they are great. Plug them into your house outlet for 10-12 hours and you are good to go. Depending on just how humid the environment is they can last for weeks before needing a recharge. I have been using several of the EVD500 model in a couple of different applications for over a year and I am very happy with them.

Finally found the article and it was the Eva-Dry
A bunch of places on the net carry it including Amazon ($16.95)
Google: EDV 300 and Eva-Dry
