Looking for my first bag - 02-20-2008, 09:23 AM

I need a camera bag. I only have a D50 with 18-55 and a 70-300. I would like a backpack type (I think). Any suggestions? I would also like to spend less than $65.00

I would say look at a sling style bag like the Tamrac Velocity 7 (or 9) or like the Kata I have for sale...

I think a sling would be better for a D50 and 2 lenses because they are more accessible while walking around. I like to use them during travel because you don't have to remove the bag to access them yet they are a bit more comfortable than a standard shoulder bag.

Hi Scott,
This Canon backpack is great for $50 bucks. Here is a link to it at B&H.

It should be available at your local shops, I got mine here in Austin at Precision Camera. I used it a couple years, the only thing I would recommend is to go to REI or Whole Earth Provisions and get a raincover for it. They have raincovers for about $15, so that's right at your budget.
I sold mine to get a backpack that will also carry my powerbook, but if you don't want to carry a computer, it's fine.

Just received the Canon backpack from Amazon yesterday. Fits my 40D with 70-200 f/2.8 attached, Canon 10D body, Tamron 17-50 lens, Tamron 28-75 lens, Canon 50mm lens, batteries, charger, cards, extension tubes. I'll use it at a wedding this weekend. We'll see how things come out of and go into it.

The Canon logo is like a tie tack kinda thing. One little snip and it's gone. I don't like to advertise that I'm carrying cameras in my backpack, so I always remove logos if possible.

Yep I can really pack it into that bag. 1D, K10D with small zoom attached, 70-200/2,8, 50/2, 28/2,8, and 2x 285's with a couple of cords and batteries.

The style should also depend on what kind of shooting you do. SOme of the slings and backpacks are good for hiking/walking and still being able to access your gear without taking 'em off. Me, I've always had regular shoulder bags because in setting them down, I know they aren't going to topple over.
