Rolling Bag Suggestions Needed - 05-23-2008, 10:40 PM

I currently use a Domke F-7 on my commercial location shoots and my shoulder hates me.
Looking for a rolling bag for that purpose. Needs to hold the same amount of stuff as my F-7 which is basically everything in my sig plus all the little stuff like batteries, sb800 and sb600, cords, memory cards and my Epson P-5000.
Needs to be something that can take abuse and might as well make it airline compliant incase the need arises. I don't necessarily need specific bag model suggestions if you at least have a company to recommend. I've never looked for this kind of bag before, only shoulder bags and backpacks.
Thanks!

A friend of mine has a kata roller that holds three times more stuff than in your sig, and it is a decent layout.

My boss has a tamrac roller, that is airport compliant, and will hold his 300mm f/2.8. Both are bulky though, so if you are wanting small, I am not sure.

Look at the pelican case. Super sturdy, can take a beating, good protection, and is carry on size. I just bought one and I can easily get two bodies (1D & 30D w/ Grip), 70-200 2.8 IS, 2x 580ex IIs, 135 2.0L, 24-105 4L, 17-40 4L, 50 1.8, 85 1.8, 1.4x TC. 2 1D batteries, 3 sets of AAs, notepads, gels, diffusers, memory cards etc...

Here is a link for it at cases4less.com http://www.all-pelican-cases-4-less....ican_1510.html

Get the one with dividers though instead of foam and get the lid organizer. Should come out to just over 200 shipped with both of those.

Ihave the Think Tank International. It is big enough for all my stuff and still considered carry on easily, except for those little puddle jumpers that only are big enough for a shoe!!! And it takes some serious abuse from me.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I think I'll get a feel for some of these locally.
They're pricier than I thought they'd be.

Andy, why the dividers over the foam? Just Curious. From your description, I want to buy one. Maybe pelican needs to pay you an advertisement fee. :)

I second ThinkTank. Expensive, but very well built.

This is a timely thread. I have a Pelican 1564 ordered that will be delivered tomorrow. This model has the padded dividers. And I bought the optional lid organizer. I am hoping it will hold most of my stuff. My backpack is too small and the gear is heavy. With the rolling case, I shoud be able to drag it to wherever I need to go and if need be, I can lock it to something sturdy with a Kryptonite cable.

Should make a good seat to rest on in between events at the track or baseball tournaments, etc. At least I hope so.

I'm planning on carrying two bodies with grips, 120-300 f/2.8 Sigma, 70-200 Sigma, 2-3 more lenses, flash and the usual assortment of batteries and other stuff.

I'll post a report with a pic or two in a day or so.
Mike

Abel, what can you tell me about the two cases and why you ended up with the Think Tank?
Thank you.

well the pelican 1510 was a bit small for what i needed... i sold it and got the international and it had quick a bit more usable space for what i needed. i love the fact it has built in TSA locks for the zippers and i think the newer Version 2's come with another lock to go along with the wire rope cable so that you can secure the entire bag while shooting a wedding or something similar. they even have serial numbers so you can now register them etc.

Think Tank makes amazing stuff... very well thought out.

if youre here in houston i think HCE has a bunch of internationals and pelicans in stock... ask for mike wheeler, be sure to bring your gear in and theyll let you try which ever one to see which one works best for you...

thats the best way to do it... see how your gear fits before you buy one... instead of buying one and then getting home and finding out its a tad too small. that was my mistake. hehe. i didnt try it out before hand.
