Backpacks... Tamrac or Tenba? - 02-09-2005, 10:35 PM

Looking at getting a new backpack for some upcoming gear, and my laptop. My laptop's a big SOB, so I need a big pack. I'm looking at between these 2 right now, since Lowepro doesn't have anything for a computer this big.

I'm worried about dust/water/humidity getting in, so anyone have experience with either brand? Yes, I do plan on taking my stuff outdoors quite a bit, and eventually overseas hiking. Thanks guys.

I just yesterday picked up a Lowepro Computrekker AW backpack. It fits my huge Inspiron 7500 in there, so it should fit anything. It is pretty big. It is basically the minitrekker AW with an extra computer pouch in the back. I like the verticle tripod/monopod holder too. My only concern was fitting my 300D with battery grip in there. It seems to be fine.

Picked it up along with a new Canon 50mm 1.8, nice neckstrap, and microfiber cleaning cloth at Fort Worth Camera Supplies. Probably could have gotten it a little cheaper online, but the lens was about the same price as online shops (give or take $5).

edit: it is close to the minitrekker, not microtrekker

you can also throw the Lowepro Minitrekker into the ring... thats what i use and ive been fond of it so far...

i like the drop down pouch that holds my tripod... im not sure if the other brands offer a similar pouch... plus the minitrekker comes with a complete nylon all weather cover that stows on the bottom...

I thought you couldn't put a laptop in a MiniTrekker?

You can't put it in the minitrekker, but the Computrekker has a slot for it. It is the same size, but a little thicker than the minitrekker.

Your Inspiron is a little bit thinner. I have the XPS, so im worried about it fitting correctly. I've crossed the Tenba off my list for now... it will fit everything I need it to, but its not even close to an AW style like the Lowepro. Jeebubs why is this so damn difficult?

The inspiron I have is just shy of 2.5" thick by 13 x 10.5 (and weighs a ton) but it does fit. If you're much wider than 13", you may be in trouble though.

I looked at a Tamrac in the store because I've had great luck with my 706 bag, but the one they had was a little too small for me.

I've got a Crumpler Brian's Hot Tub on order. From all I read and seeing other bags from the company, this is what I wanted. It is roomy, comfortable, and doesn't look like a camera bag. It also opens from the "back" which means nobody can "pull it open" on you.

Take a look at it at http://www.crumplerbags.com/cartInde...g&catId=22 (their website stinks, but you can get a feel for it.) You can also see it at B&H at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...401&is=REG
