Kata 3N1 vs Tenba Medium Sling vs Tenba Photo Sling - 10-21-2008, 12:10 PM

Anyone use the Kata or Tenba sling bags?

Basically, my camera has outgrown my Tamrac Velocity 8, and I am looking for something new. It has to be able to handle the A900+VG likely with the 24-70Z attached. The camera is approx. 6 x 6.75 x 8" with the 24-70 and a little over 11" long with the 70-200G. I have two big bags and am looking for something good for short trips, like the motorcycle show coming up. Ideally I'd be able to pack the A900 w/24-70 attached and maybe stash the 70-200G or upcoming 16-35Z in the bag with it.

So far I am looking at the Kata 3N1 30, Tenba Shootout Medium Sling or Tenba Photo Sling but I have no experience with either brand.

I have a LowePro FastPack 350 and Vertex 100, and am very happy with both, but wasn't sure the Slingshot was what I was looking for. As for the Tamrac, the Velocity 8 has been a good bag, but I'd like to try something new. A big selling point for me on the Kata is that you can use it as a backpack or slingbag.

Any opinions?

I just got the 3n1-20 from HCE. They also had the 3n1-30 in stock. I really like it, although it was a bit difficult to get used to the closure system. Now that I see how it works, its all good. Build quality doesn't seem up to par with the other Kata bags I have (HB-207 & H-14) The 3n1's have smaller zippers and the fabric doesn't seem as thick and well padded. I recommend it as a second bag when you want to travel light, but wouldn't store my equipment in it. I use Pelican cases for that. Anyway, If you are ever near Houston Camera Exchange, swing by there and see it for yourself.

I forgot to mention that although the 3n1-20 is small and light, I manage to squeeze a Canon 1Ds Mark III, 70-200mm, 24-70mm, 35mm 1.4, 16-35mm, 100mm macro, 15mm fisheye, 1.4X Teleconverter, and an extra battery in there.

Wow! That's a good fit then. I will have to swing by there. It would only be for light day trips. I have the Vertex for travel.

Just received this from the head of Lowepro marketing who is currently at a photo Expo: "We’re introducing a bag at this Expo called the Classified.

You can see some news on these models here: http://www.lowepro.com/index.php?id=666

More specific product pages will be on our website by next month when the product itself should become available."

You might want to check these bags out...

Finally got my hands on the Kata....and ended up with a LowePro Flipside 300. It can fit the A900 w/24-70 attached, 70-200G, flash and 50mm with a little space left for a TC.

Got me a 3N1 10 - I was able to fit a Canon 5D attached to a Canon 70-200 IS 2.8 into it the long full way nicely. It fits fine, but packing anything else thicker than a credit card in it is like squeezing a wallet in the back of Pamela Anderson's thong.

(Please don't ban me for saying that, I couldn't think of anything else to compare it to).
