Where to get Padded Divideds for Carry on DSLR carry - 01-27-2009, 03:17 PM

In the process off looking at great camera bags, I thought it may just be cheaper to convert my current carry on bag(since I rarely travel) into my DSLR bag for shoots. Does any one know where I can get padded dividers I can install on the inside to carry a body, 2-4 lens, 2 flashes, charger and batteries.

I did the same thing a few years back using a hardshell case. I bought foam in 2"-3" sheets upholstery foam from a fabric store (JoAnne's in my case), cut openings to fit the items. (the 2"-3" sheets make it easier to cut, you will need to stack them to get the full depth).

buy better foam if you have a choice, some cheaper types will make lotsa little, itty-bitty, teensy-tiny bits....

I know most the camera places sell pads for their specific case model, you'll just have to look for manufacturers with cases similar to your carry-on and try to see if you can get pads from them.

That's why you want pads, the cheap foam can be hazardous to your camera, lenses' health.

for something a little different, you should take a look at Domke Wraps.

Here's an example of their use.

Domke wraps are really good... also check out the Domke padded inserts. They have dozens of combos that have worked for me over the years with my non-photography specific waistpack.

I prefer the Mountainsmith Tour Pack with padded inserts for my needs over any new bag out there.

Yeah... you really can't go wrong with a pelican case for portability/durability for longer ventures.

And I just found out KEH has used Pelican cases as well as many others such as Halliburton.

I've two Pelican cases and Halliburton Briefcase with 2,000,000+ miles on it and still going strong.

I've got sevarl Domke (and other brands) wraps that I use. Helpful for when I need to use a non-camera bag.

Some companies will sell the dividers separately as replacement parts for their bags. Like the Tenba messenger that I've got for my computer and carry on camera stuff, they sell the insert here:

If you want to do it right... - 03-24-2009, 12:00 PM

http://www.casecad.com/index.htm
You can download free software to draw the size & cutouts you want & they will make a custom fitted insert for you. It cost a bit more than a replacement set of foam from a case mfg. & they use a very high quality foam.
good luck,
kev
