Bag/Case recommendation - 01-30-2009, 03:38 PM

I posted this on FredMiranda and got exactly one response asking for clarification, but no suggestions. Since I find this place friendlier, I'll ask here. When I say "traveling", I mean by car, mostly to softball tournaments, other sporting events.

Thanks

I'm looking for a bag or case, preferably for my gear for travelling.

I really like the safety of the Pelican cases, and the old Zero Halliburton cases.

Here is what I'll be traveling with:

- Dell Inspiron 15" Laptop and power cord
- Canon Rebel XTi + grip
- Canon Digital Rebel + grip
- 50 1.8
- 70-200 F4L
- 28-85mm kit lens.
- Memory holder
- Four spare batteries for the above grips
- 420ex flash

Thoughts?

The only addition that may happen in the next year or so is a 300 F4 IS .

Thanks!

Mike.

If you do not mind a backpack...you can do a crumpler...

Crumpler-Backpack

If you want something a little more traditional looking...Pelican overnighter...

Pelican Soft Case

Hope this helps out...

Are you wanting a wheeled case, a back pack or something else? I have a nice wheeled Delsey case that would hold all that and I use it a lot to travel. I really like that the insert comes out and can be carried separately in the car if I want to leave my lenses, etc. where I can get to them easily. I also have a nice big Tamrac expedition backpack, which I carry when a wheeled bag would be a problem to carry around - it would also hold a laptop. While I think both of these are pretty well made, they aren't a hard shell case like a Pelican. Pelican does make a wheeled case, though, so have you looked at those?

Oh, I also have a Crumpler - I don't have the one that also accommodates a laptop, but I do really like my Crumpler bag a lot.

I prefer the Tamrac system. I use a Pro12 and piggyback it to a strong box.

I have a back pack type case now, but it wouldn't hold the laptop (which is a new addition to the mix), and the bag has recently ripped out.

I would prefer a hard case like a Zero Halliburton or Pelican case. But I don't know what would work size wise, and don't have a dealer close by who carries those cases.

But I'm going to look at the Pelican roller case.

Thanks Lisa and Tony for your replies! This is why TPF is better than FM. IMO, of course.

Mike.

I have seen and handled the pelican pcs183 like those shown in the photo's above. I really liked them and plan on one in the next month for my current and soon to be purchased gear. They should handle all your stuff and also that bag for the computer detaches for those times you aren't taking it along.

Joseph & John & Captain Tom - Thanks.

I'll look at the Streetwalker HardDrive bag. I gotta wonder though, who thinks the names of these products up?

Streetwalker?

That would be a red flag name for me.

Thanks all!

Mike.

Mike,

The Pelican 1510 is made to carry a laptop.....

Pelican 1510

I know I saw somewere a laptop insert for the camera version 1560....

Pelican 1560

Both of these can be carried onto a plane...I have taken my 1560 before with camera equipment and other things...it has a lot of room...

I have a Pelican 1510 for air travel and a 1550 with out wheels for car travel and when I'm taking both the Leica stuff and Canon stuff. I'm looking at third most likely a 1560 for Telephots and other Canon items.

When you decide on a case check out KEH they carry used Halliburton and Pelican cases. For new Pelican stuff and replacement inserts try Pelican 4 Less.

I think you're right on target with the Pelican Case.....
My recommendation is either the 1510 or 1560

I use the ThinkTank Airport Antidote (has a separate pouch and bag for 15" laptop [I]and[I] it fits under the seat in front of you on an aeroplane. But it isn't a hard case like some of the other cases you're looking at, and I don't particularly care for the way that I have to hook my tripod on.

I have a Pelican PCS 179B camera case. It is a rolling case with a zippered lab top case attached. I have traveled with it by plane and for local jobs. It is a very good soft side case and very versatile.

I recently purchased a Pelican 1510 and there is plenty of room if you want to add a laptop to it. It would fit in the lid, I have the dividers vs the foam inserts and I have my d300, 18-200(hood reversed), 80-200 2.8, 70-300G, 50 1.8, batteries and charger, memory cards, mem card reader, cleaning supplies, rain cover, and LX3 with its charger and batteries(4).

For my 'daily commuter', I use a thinktank Urban Disguise 60 with the backpack strap which wears comfortably. My step-mother saw it today and wants me to get her one. So, I have my mother's day gift already lined up. :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention, in my TT UD60, I have attached to the d300 is the 18-200 with the hood reversed, 80-200, using the backpack attachment with a Dell Latitude 620.

To add, I bought my father a 1510 as well with foam and he loves it, it holds his leica equipment, canon 70-200, 5D, and its accessories.
