Case for a Nifty-Fifty? - 02-10-2009, 01:15 PM

Ok, given the semi-fragile nature of the Canon 50mm 1.8mkII aka: Nifty-Fifty...
Whats the recommended case, pouch, etc, that can properly protect that lens when in the midst of the LowePro backpacks?

Even when its in the dividers, it still gets bounced around enough to potential knock the front element out of whack, so.... other than not storing it with the Canon hood or hood mount ring on it.... what kind of case would you recommend to use for it.

Thanks

That is an excellent question, and I wish I knew the answer. Considering it's the smallest and lightest EOS lens Canon makes, I don't know if getting one of the bags/cases from any other lens would help or not.

I don't have the hood for mine ... is it possible to mount it backward when in storage (like I can with all my hooded lenses)?? That actually might lend some small amount of protection.

The thing isn't semi-fragile, it's extremely fragile. I've split one open like an egg, and the other, after a bounce, no longer autofocuses. It's the only lens in 13+ years of Canon ownership that I've had a problem with.

I bet one of the zing pouches would work just fine. I have one for my 15mm fisheye and it really protects it well. Very thick neoprene.

I would look for a store with a big box of old lens cases (back when lenses came with hard leather cases) and see if you can find one it will fit in. My Zuiko 21/2.0 came with such a case as did all my Zeiss Contarex lenses.

Haven't you gone through something like a dozen of them?

Hey Todd, I will take a photo of the hood when I get the lens comes back from warranty svc.
The hood mounts like this:
Lens > screw in metal ring > hood.
The screw in metal ring sticks out off the front of the lens about double the thickness of a filter (assuming you dont already have a simple UV on it already).
Then on that ring, there is a groove around the outside of it. The hood has 2 spring loaded clips that you have to position into the groove.

It makes for a nice combo, but if you tried to store it with the hood on it without a custom fit case, the hood is so much wider than the lens that it makes the front lens element be the culprit that would take any external pressure from other devices in the bag. (not a good combination).

John Stovall: good suggestion, I will make a run to HCE this weekend to see what hard cases they might have on hand. Yeah, I remember the days when lenses all came with hard cases too. Man those would come in handy. The mfrs need to realize that the cool, little lenses just cant handle life in the bag with the bigger lenses...

Ha, John! Just two. They just fly out of my bag. But I'm confident it isn't me or else I wouldn't have my eyes on a replacement ... 35 f/1.4L.

Would be interested in a photo of the hood, Greg.

You want the 35L. I heard that if Abel had only 2 lenses this would be one of them!

Nifty Fifty Lens Hood ES--62 - 02-19-2009, 09:14 PM

Toverman, et al:

Here are the shots of the Canon ES-62C lens hood.
I will explain the photos one by one.
1. The 50mm MkII
2. The 50mm w/ Hoya 52mm UV filter
3. The 50mm w/filter w/ Canon 62-L hood ring
4. The 50mm w/filter, w/ring, w/ES-62 hood

Yes, it adds a lot to the front of the lens (~37mm in length w/filter).
The hood is 83mm across.

The next post will have closeups of the ring and hood and how the hood attaches to the ring.

SpeedRacerSlots added 11 Minutes and 16 Seconds later...Double Post Merged Below

Ok, now for the hood and how it attaches.

The 52mm ring (Canon 62-L) which comes with the ES-62C hood is a pretty heavy duty metal ring.
The ring as you can see below has a groove in the outside ring. That is where the hood attaches.

The hood has 4 tabs and 2 buttons on it. Press the buttons in, and the tabs recess. Slide it over the ring, line up the groove and let go. Not really all that hard. I would however have preferred to have the twist-lock hoods like my other Canon or Tamron lenses.

Hey, thanks for the illustrated details! The hood for my 85 f/1.8 attaches in a similar way but without the extra ring. I do like the more solid twist-ons of my other lenses, though.

I second the Zing pouch suggestion. My 50 used to fly out of my bag (no harm done though), but now the Zing pouch keeps everything in place and provides a little extra protection. They are nice a flexible so they easily fit into a camera bag.

LENS WRAPS!!. Lots of different colors to choose from. Get one that way too big and wrap it around a couple of times. Adds layers of softness and add bulk to keep in in place.

for any of you that saw me make a lens hood here....
http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...ight=lens+hood
... making them with kydex......I think you could make your own hard pouch. Take a pice of kydex, heat, bend to specifications you want. Line with a soft material and there you go. probably take 20 minutes. Then you could just drop the hard case in your back pack and it would act like a frame around your lens.
