Non-Camera Equip bags as Camera Equipment Bags - 03-21-2009, 09:42 PM

So, how many of y'all use bags not actually made for camera gear, for your camera gear.

I'll admit that I do.

If you do also - give some examples.

Here's some of mine:

Tripod Bags: I usually use the bag that a collapsible chair came in for this. It has a nice strap to carry it with, is padded, and I got a chair out of it. ABout $25 at Sams Club, which is cheaper than an actual tripod bag would cost.
Also works for lightstands & muslin.

Other bags that will work for tripods & lightstands:
Baseball Bat bags. Hockey gear bags. and Soft Golf Bags.

Mini-bag to hold a lens or two: I've used insulated lunch bags for this. It's how I've often packed my lenses when I also put them in a suit case.

I use gym bags for muslins and grip gear. I used to use an ancient typewriter case for carrying power cords and plug strips, etc.

Backpacks & book bags for cameras & smaller cases.
Fly reel cases for lenses, filters, meters, etc.
Insulated lunch coolers.
I also use the bag a chair came in for 1 of my tripods.

A rolling suitcase rules my setup when I don't need the Pelican. Subdivide gear (bodies in a bag, long lenses in one, short zooms and primes, sync cords, flash, etc) and they all go into the suit case.

Alice packs without frames are great for grip and background. Rolled muslins in the main compartment and clamps, studs, swivels and whatever in the outer pockets.

I've been using Byo sacks (actually the Dollar Tree rendition) for little things too. The coozies are great for flashes and lenses (smaller ones at least), the lunch totes are great for holding a body + USB cord.

Other than the occasional, non-photo backpack, I usually use photo-specific bags for my gear. Unless you count the Hefty Cinch Sack and twist tie I use in a pinch.

I usually just use stuff made for camera gear. However, I've heard that diaper bags are awesome. Plus, they're not the kind of thing that thieves would usually target to steal.

Chris, Ken and Michelle all use big rolling toolboxes. I guess I need one to stay part of the club.

My first "camera bag" was the right size, but had no inserts at all. So I made my own. I bought a closed-foam pad -- the kind that you can get at sporting goods stores that goes under a sleeping bag as an insulator. And I cut it up into a shape that would fit in the bag, cut inserts and pockets for it, and glued it altogether using contact cement. I used that bag for several years, and it held up well.

Best,

Michael

It's not a "Camera Bag"... but my MountainSmith Tour Pack with a couple of Domke inserts sits much much closer to my waist and cinches in place tighter than any waist bag I've used.

A fellow photog. in town uses a crazy patterned diaper bag.

I carry my gear around in a Kifaru Marauder from time to time. It's my general-purpose three-day assault pack / carryon bag / backpack.

I bought an old green canvas-feel bag from Colonel Bubbie's in Galveston to carry my camera around in for awhile. Didn't really offer much cushioning, though, so I switched to the Airport Antidote.

too funny the diaper bag comment...... i have heard that is a good strategy. even have a piece of two of other baby stuff nearby certainly would make a potential thief looking in your car think twice. i mean. diapers. not on the top 10 list of items to steal. a friend of mine uses a small/medium size lunch cooler for her camera. she goes every where with her camera so while she is out, it is inconspicuous when she needs to leave it in her car.

for what ' I ' use ....... well, i go to the dollar store and they have these nifty little zipper pouches. i bought about 6 of them. and use them for camera charger bases and power cords, spare batteries, flash remotes, pens-hairbrush-cash-chapstick. if you buy different color pouches you can color code your stuff.
