Bag to carry 70-200 IS attached to camera + few others... - 05-05-2009, 02:17 PM

I've perused the local camera shop and have not seen anything fitting...

Can anyone suggest a bag for 70-200 2.8 IS attached to a 5DII with grip. ( I know, it's a beast)

I would prefer it to be tall rather than wide....

Anyone with experience with Crumpler 7 or 8 Million Dollar homes?

Other things I may want to put in the bag include 580EXII and 24-70 2.8.

I am looking for a bag to do the same. I was leaning towards the ThinkTank Glass Taxi.

Tamrac model #5608 Pro8.

I keep a 70-300 and vertical grip on my A300 and there is room to spare. All-in-all I carry the camera, 3 spare lenses, a flash unit, battery charger and a point and shoot in the bag.

I have the glass taxi from Think Tank and also their Ultralight. I think the Glass Taxi is what you want for the items you mentioned. I can put the 70-200 lens with a 1.4 extender and the mounted hood on my D700 with grip in the bag and have room for some extras like a flash and/or extra lens (normal or short zoom) next to the long lens. The Ultralight I can take 2 bodies and one mounted with the 70=200 as above - plus flash and additional 2 lenses plus some other extras. These are very deep bags and hold the camera and grip or prof. model camera nicely.

Ditto on the LowePro Sling Shot 300 AW!
* XSi gripped with 70-200 2.8 L (reversed hood) stored in the center, no problem.
* Also carrying a Sigma 18-200 OS, Tamron 27-75 2.8, 50 1.8, 2nd XSi Gripped, 580ex I and a 430ex I all in the center compartment with it.

Top compartment is reserved for 4 battery sets for the flashes (all bagged in groups of 4), Pelican SD card case, Stoffen for the 580, and a few odds and ends.

I love the configuration of the bag, and it wears well, even when shooting, but I personally would love to find a way to reconfigure the inside so that I can carry the 70-200 2.8 unmounted, so I can leave the Tamron 28-75 2.8 (my primary short lens) on it.

Wellll....this might not be as cool as some of the other sugggestions, but if you have a young family, or even if not, think security, too.

Carry your camera and accessories in something that doesn't scream CAMERA EQUIPMENT! STEAL ME!

Besides, you want to feel like you are developing permanent curvature of the spine? Carry a full camera bag for a day at Disneyland!

One pro used to carry his camera and lenses in an Army surplus gas mask bag. When I was a reporter for a large daily newspaper, I carried my camera and only spare lens in a yellow plastic Forest Service garbage bag. It kept the dust off the equipment, and I could leave my car open in the desert heat, and it didn't get stolen.

Diaper bag! The gaudier and "cuter", the better!

As I get older, I find that less is better. My wife and I took a cruise. I took my camera, and an 18-55mm lens, and a 70-210 that stayed in the cabin safe most of the time. Never needed anything else.

All I need, including a bottle or two of water and snacks, I carry in the fishing vest my wife got me years ago. It works well. Too much stuff, tho, and I look sort like of a very handsome Michelin man.

Plan ahead. Two lenses, max. They will do 95% of everything you may encounter. A light flash, some extra batteries and a charger, memory cards, or film canisters...you remember film: that OLD technology? A few (darned few) more gewgaws, and you are ready.

Check out the Think Tank Streetwalker series too. I think there are 3 versions, but all of them were designed to carry a 70-200 2.8 with hood in place, attached to body, and still has a lot of room. It's what I'm getting next week because I've been looking for the exact same type of bag as you. I get tired of taking my 70-200 off every time I put my gear up.

Only thing that has been holding me back getting it so far is that it's a backpack. I'm doing the backpack thing now and I really would prefer a shoulder bag, but for the price and what you get with the think tanks I'm willing to sacrafice.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, I thought the glass taxi was made just to hold big glass. Does it actually have inserts for other gear?

As I type my daughter's 25+ year old LL Bean book bag is holding the following:
EOS-1 body
70-210/2.8, 17-35/2.8, 2x T.C.
Gossen Luna-Pro sbc & Minolta Auto Meter IV
12 rolls min. assorted 135, 120 & 220 film
12 Graphic 4x5 film holders
12 AA batteries
The bag is not full either.

Enjoy.

I believe a 25yr old bag is perfect for gear about the same age!

Just kiddin' with ya...

For the record, I absolutely love Think Tank gear. Excellent American Made products that are well thought out, but a bit expensive.

For me, I currently use the Airport Security and Urban Disguise 60. The UD 60 pretty much goes with me to all sporting events. I can put a 300L F2.8 IS, 70-200L F2.8IS, 16-35, + flash and 2 bodies with grips in a over the shoulder bag. Love it.

The optical items in the bag were purchased new by me in December, 1999. My newest lenses. So there! The bag had already survived Trinity Episcopal School, Ben Franklin H.S. and Ole Miss by then.

No way would anyone steal this bag. No kid would be caught dead using this bag for books. The leather bottom is awesome! Made in USA also.

I use a ThinkTank Digital Holster 50. It holds a 1 series body mounted to a 70-200 f2.8L IS just fine

I just got some Think Tank pouches:

- Digital Holster 30 (holds my camera with 70-200 WITH the lens hood in place)

- Digital Holster 30 (for camera #2 with 24-70 with lens hood in place)

- a couple of other pouches for other lenses and my flash, plus one for my blower, a lens cloth, batteries, and memory cards.

I LOVE the Think Tank belt system!!! I can carry EVERYthing if I want to, and it doesn't hurt my back at all. And when I need to get down on the ground for a low-angle shot, I just slide stuff around so it isn't in my way. (When I used a backpack, I had to take one arm out a lot, because it got in the way.)
