Without a doubt, my favorite lens I own. Not the most used, mind you... but my favorite. If my goal is just to get a good portrait of someone, this lens is what I immediately go for.

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi - ISO 100 | 85 mm | 1/2000 sec at f / 1.8

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi - ISO 800 | 85 mm | 1/125 sec at f / 1.8

Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi - ISO 800 | 85 mm | 1/100 sec at f / 1.8

Canon EOS 40D - ISO 200 | 85 mm | 1/5000 sec at f / 1.8

I really like this lens.

All pics shot outside, late afternoon light w/flash fill.

Canon 20D : 1/200 : F/2.8 : ISO 400 : Manual Mode

Second and third shots are both from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I'm afraid that 90% of my photography is there, so that's naturally where many of my examples come from. :-) Galleries:

Balloon Glow at 1.8 - 08-05-2008, 12:07 PM

5D; F1.8; 1/664sec; ISO 500

I didn't know which lens to bring to the balloon glow at last year's Big Country Balloon Fest. I thought I might need a lot of aperture, so I brought the 85mm 1.8. Turns out I could have stopped down, and maybe should have, but I think this came out OK anyway.

Although I love the technical aspects of the lens, I don't use it that often.

Canon 5D : 85mm : 1/250th : F2.8 : ISO 200 : Manual Mode : Fill Flash

Canon EF 85 f/1.8 USM is a great lens to have. I have used it for nearly 8 years now, many with film and now digitial. It is a lens to have.

Here are a couple recent ones I took of my younger boy on a playground.

Canon 30D: @85mm : 1/320 : f/2.0 : 200 ISO : AV Mode : O Exp Comp : 580EX in HSS

He was sad here because a little girl he had never met had just told him that they weren't friends. He got over it quickly. :)

Has anyone used the 85mm/1.8 for wedding shots or similar work?
How would it compare with using the 70-200mm in such cases?

Tks.

I use either this or the 85L for weddings & other events. I prefer this over the 70-200, unless I need more than the 85 range.

Pros: lighter, lower light capable than the 70-200, faster focusing speed, nice bokeh, small & perfect for unobtrusive candid.

Cons: feet-zooming can be tiresome but compared to carrying this and the 70-200 all day, I'd say it's a plus.

My 70-200 has been gathering dust for the last few months.
