Iv'e noticed that several people use this lens to shoot butterflies. Here's a gulf fritilary on morning glory. It's cropped, but not an extreme crop. Canon 20D; ISO 800; F8.0; shutter speed 1/1600 sec.

Mike,
That is one of the best Kestrel pictures I've seen. I try to get my
Kestrel shots around old Kathy, could you share the location of this one?
Thanks

Thanks Wayne, much appreciated I shot this one at the Baytown Nature Center. He comes in every Fall, and camps out for a few months.

Mike,
Is the Baytown Nature Center back in business after Ike?
Skidish too the max, I find it very hard to get any decent
set up on them in places where you can't use a blind.

Canon 40D, Aperture priority, al servo, 1/1000 shutter, f 5.6, ISO 400, F.L. 340mm. Burst mode. I've heard some people say the focus on these lenses are slow. It looks pretty good to me. If you can't tell he is moving on out!!! Images resized and sharpened slightly, no cropping, IS turned off.

Great shots, Jim!
I figure the focus can't be too slow, after all there are sharp photos of a fast car and jet taken with the lens. It's on my list for shooting youth sports ... those little kids don't move nearly as fast!

I can't tell you how it does with a 1.4x teleconverter but here are a few of mine with a Sigma 2x teleconverter. Autofocus doesn't work with a 2x, had to manually focus. Pic 1 is a crop of pic 3, 40D body, 1/250 shutter, 400 ISO, F11.0, FL 800mm +1.6 crop factor =about 1300mm. Pic 2, Shutter 1/200, ISO 200 F11.0, same body and focal length. Also used a tripod and remote shutter release.
