This is a lens that will teach you how to shoot macro... or teach you how to sell gear With a little patience you get "right up on 'em". Personally I think to use one of these well you need:

(1) Focusing rail system (don't have one)
(2) Good tripod (have one though I've shot without one with this lens)
(3) Ring light.

Here's a couple of shots with a ring light and a good tripod. The lack of a focusing rail caused the process of shooting these to be a bit nerve wracking.

Since I took these I've modified the way that I shoot with this lens. I stop all the way down or very near it. Shutter is at 1/125. ISO is whatever it takes to make the shot work at +1 in the ring flash. Doing so maximizes DOF.

Full frame- No cropping. About 4x

Camera Make = Canon
Camera Model = Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 1/250 second = 0.004 second
Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 8/1 = F8
ISO Speed Ratings = 400
Shutter Speed (Exposure Time) = 1/250 second
Aperture = F8
Flash = Flash fired, compulsory flash mode
Focal Length = 65/1 mm = 65 mm

I agree. This lens is not for the casual photographer. The photo of the pencil was handheld, but since then I have acquired a rail.

For those that are contemplating such a lens - this lens does not have a focusing ring. You must move the camera or subject to focus the scene. Lighting is an issue also because at 5X the lens subject distance is quite small. Even a ring light at this setting almost becomes a background light.

However, the shots you can get are worth the trouble.
