Nice shot, Tri. I like both!
I know what you mean though... i always struggle with this when doing b/w conversions unless the color was just horrible in the original version.
But if I had to pick one of these, I'd go with the black and white due to the overcast sky.

Dennis,
Thank you for looking and commenting. I am still indecisive and will play with that shot another day.

I like the color version better. I think if you worked on it a bit to make some of the colors 'pop' you'd like it as well. Some low grade HDR techniques maybe?

Tri, how wonderful to photograph in Venice - I've only been there once, when I was 18, by myself, when Venice was not so crowded with tourists, and I absolutely loved it - didn't have a camera at the time.... you did a great job capturing moments and places.
About this image here, I find the first image a bit cold, but I think the colors of Venice's houses are beautiful in their warmth and b&w removes that psychological warmth. So I prefer color, but warmer.
I did a retouch of the color palette to bring the warmth across the frame, sky, water, and I kinda like it, but it's your image... just some thoughts.

Thank you, Robin and Paco.
Paco, you did a fantastic interpretation of the photo. I love it more than the original. I am going to have to recreate your version! BTW, Venice is, indeed, one of the most beautiful cities I have visited. I did so much walking, and it was so crowded because of the Carnival.

Tri, glad you like it. I took me just a few seconds to make those color adjustments using "control points" from Nik software. This is built into Nikon Capture NX 2 software, but also in other Nik software products. It's great to just drop a control point, adjust tones as needed and then cut/paste to cover your space. If you haven't used Control Points and want to give it a try, I believe Capture NX 2 has a free trial here: Nikon Imaging | Global Site | Capture NX 2 Trial Version - Download (Windows)

Tri, you shot Carnival in Venice?
You get any shots of the people that dress up in costumes?
Was it worth going there with the crowds?
Or would you have preferred going during the off season?

Thank you, Paco for the tips and the link.
Angelo, it was so crowded, but the festive atmosphere, the costumed characters, and Venice made the trip very enjoyable. However, my next trip there will be earlier in the year when there is a lot of fog to capture Venice in a creamy, and romantic way. As far as the photos of the characters, I took many and will post more of them later in the "people" forum. I did post one in B+W under "Venetian Characters" in the same forum last week.

I was there in '96 but not during Carnival.
I absolutely hate crowds but I may have to make an exception if the people dressed in costumes are worth it.
