I have seen a couple of images online recently that were taken using the technique of shaking the camera to create an abstract image. I thought they were interesting and wanted to give the technique a try.
I found the experience very interesting. This is a technique that makes you think - this is easy; anyone can do that. The reality is that it was more difficult than I thought.
I would like any thoughts or opinions you may have about this image. This is the only one I liked out of a number that I took yesterday. I don't want to "poison the well" by giving any of the reasons I like it.
Tell me what you really think, even if it's negative. That's the only way I will know. Thanks in advance. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

I think it's interesting but would have been better if those dark brown blobs (I'm guessing trees) weren't on the right side. They seem to obscure what might have been a nice scene with green grass and a road. Makes me wonder what was on the other side.
Most "shaken" photos that seem to work IMHO have been stands of trees or something that's truly vertical or horizontal and unified. It's a fun technique to try, but I've never been very happy with the ones I've gotten. Will be interesting to see what else you get.

Thank you both for your comments.
Johnny, thanks for your honesty. Upon reflection, I will agree that it is at least a poor application of the technique I was using which comes across as simply a poor image.
Charrie, thank you for your comments as well. I really am finding this technique interesting. As I said in the original post, it would seem easy but capturing a pleasing image is more difficult than I imagined.
I think what I like is that it is really making me think about composition, color, and a feeling of depth. I have a few days off over Thanksgiving and I will try this again to see if I can come up with something that works better.

Gary,
I don't like this particular image but please KEEP experimenting. I think it has potential for the right place and subject. Take good notes so you can explain to us what you did. Then we can go give it a try without having to repeat all your mistakes. Thanks man.

Thanks Michael. You know it's interesting, I don't like it much either after I have had a day or two to look at it. I don think the technique is interesting however. I believe it really makes me consider what I'm trying to accomplish. I have a few days off over Thanksgiving and I plan to give it another go. If I manage a better image I will certainly share.

Hey Johnny, it's all good. I sincerely appreciate what you said. If everyone just gives an atta boy, then we don't really know where we are; that why we choose between NC and CC huh?

I get these all the time! ;-)
Gary, something else I've seen that is pretty interesting, is throwing your camera in the air while the shutter is open. Of course, be careful if you do this (also not so sure about doing it with an SLR, but..)

Todd, I am officially now in awe - I would have NEVER thought of throwing my camera in the air.

i actually like it, it's certainly better than 95 %, of those iPhone hispomatic pics.
it could use some improvement, but your certainly on the right track with what you are trying to do with abstract's.

Gary, I like your image quite a bit. Not only because you're experimenting and willing to take risks to get a "different" picture, but because the result in this case is quite pictorial and strong. Also, what we think is not as important when you're creating your art as how it makes *you* feel. If you liked it, that's all that matters, really. Please yourself first.
I happen to like it too, but that incidental. Just keep at it and keep on sharing.

I have done a few of these and they were mostly meet with dislike. I like it. Does it hit the mark you were shooting for? Only you can say that. This is really getting into the realm of art and the more abstract it becomes the more subjective and divided your audience will become.
Keep at it, thats the only way you we get what YOU want...

I like the technique, but I'm not sure the composition works with this one. I see the formal balance in elements here, but somehow, it just doesn't come together.
I'd keep working on it, maybe even go back there and do some more shots.

I would use that particular image as a background for some scrapbooking techniques I do time to time. I like the colors and the texture for that purpose. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
