Location Suggestions in Colorado - 06-21-2011, 04:59 PM

I will be driving to Lake City, CO in early August. I plan on proposing to my girlfriend while we are up there.

I want to propose somewhere fairly secluded. I already told her that I want to take some pictures of us with a tripod and she was all for it. My plan is after I take a few and get the exposure correct, to set the delay and "capture the moment".

Any suggestions of where the perfect spot may be near Lake City? Any help is appreciated!

Landon

If I were you I would take a drive over to the Ouray area and visit the Uncompahgre. It's gorgeous. If you're not locked into Lake City I would go to Crested Butte and head over Kebblar Pass...when the wildflowers are blooming it will take your breath away! A little up past Crested Butte you'll come to the small "town" of Gothic which is really a ghost town but one of the universities has some sort of encampment for ecological/biological studies. Mt. Gothic is a craggy outcropping set against beautiful grassy fields with a small river winding through it-it's quiet, serene and not much traffic. Let me know if you want some photos and I'll upload some tonight. I was there last year so the photos are recent.

I have only been to Lake City once. We drove up from South Fork, CO. through Creede on Colorado 149. "The perfect spot" is somewhere along that road. I suggest you try to get to Great Sand Dunes N.P. Totally different scenery from all the mountains.

Creede & Mineral County Chamber of Commerce

SouthFork.org - Colorado's Official Site for Silver Thread Visitor and Information Center

South Fork, Colorado - Silverthread

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve (U.S. National Park Service)

I hope this post is both on topic and helpful.

ps: OOPS! I forgot the Lake City link.

I don't know where Lake City is, but I was just at Ouray a couple of weeks ago. I recommend Twin Falls, along Camp Bird road. It's beautiful there!

Melany,
If you follow my links above you will see that Lake City is about 30 miles east of Ouray up, over & around some very rugged mountians. I'm not sure that you can get from Lake City to Ouray without a serious off road vehicle. GOOGLE says there is a county road between Ouray & Lake City. Only the locals would know if a car can make the trip.

We had a Surburban. You need a 4-WD to get to these falls, without a doubt.
No problem, since there are TONS of Jeep rental places around :-)

Agreed. If the county roads are passable after the winter, by all means Lake City to Ouray would be an exciting drive.

I love your photo above. I haven't been to the Four Corners area in too long. Thanks for letting me dream.

Off roaring friend informed me from personal experience, he had learned four wheel drive does not mean you don't get stuck; instead it means you get stuck in more inaccessible places.

Off roaring? LOL

I was out alone one morning (I got up early to shoot waterfalls)
I'd been hiking in one area along a river, stream, up a mountain side to a waterfail, and through a little Aspen grove.
I was out for almost 2 hours, enjoying my morning, and taking lots of photos. I got back to the truck, reached in my back pocket for the keys

DAMN!

where are my keys?

They fell out of my pocket somewhere.
in the middle of nowhere. Any my cell phone, well it was inside the truck. Locked.
I retraced my steps over and over. After an hour, I finally found them
I was a happy girl!

The National Forest Service has an active archaeology section in Colorado. Possibly some search guru can ferret worthy but lesser known/travelled/photographed sites.
Also, the U of Arkansas Center For Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST, Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST) | Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies ) had searchable data bases on line. Found some Colorado archaelogy references but that was many moons ago.

You all have given me plenty to consider! Thanks! I thought this thread was dead!

Appreciate all the comments. I will be sure to post the results in mid August.

The Jeep rental sounds like a great plan. I'm sure it's not cheap though.

From Ouray, about $150. a day. We rented the Suburban in Albq and left our car there. Much cheaper that way. I had a Jeep Cherokee reserved, but they were all gone, so I got the Suburban upgrade free.
