Houston: Blood & Bokeh - October 17th - 10-04-2009, 06:31 PM

Been working on this one for awhile...

After shooting all the haunted houses in Houston for the Chronicle (remember last year's 'scared p00pless' thread?) I can say that Phobia 290 is the biggest and best by far.

We will have plenty of shooting space and model staff for everyone.

Two different situations:
6pm-8pm : All 6 seperate houses on the grounds are for us. Will have Phobia acting staff (up to 40 actors/actresses) as well as as a couple hottie posse models to set up horror set ups.

8pm-12am : Have free reign of the 6 houses while in operation the whole night. Normally there are never cameras allowed but in this case we can shoot inside and outside the houses.

Before 8pm you should get to know the lay of the houses and places to 'embedd' yourself to hide and nail excellent shots of terrified participants.

I hadn't had this much fun in a long, long, time.

Since this is more or less a new type of event, gimmie some imput people!

However...be prepared to be scared yourselves...

i was trying to plan the same thing in Austin, but got lack of response plus it's pricey to rent a haunted house. definitely try to attend this one
So we have permission to take pictures of the visitors?

Exactly!...have been working on getting this together for an inexpensive price...

I'm gauging the response on several sites and it's going well...going to probably cap this one at 20 photographers.

These places are well built...as in no matter how bright the sun is shining, you are in TOTAL darkeness inside. House lights, lamps and flash lights are a must for setting up and shooting.

Will be bringing softboxes and umbrellas, however bare flash rocks for classic horror lighting.

As far as shooting while the houses are running, try to wear black so you can hide easier. There are certain areas between walls that you can hang out and nail shots of 'participants' being scared. Other good spots are where people exit...since usually they're running out.

Also, if you have a remote cam release and a superclamp (will have several with me) you can clamp your camera to a wall or structure out of the way and trigger remotely. This way is my fav...I've also clamped my cameras to tree branches on the outdoor haunted trail with several lights remotely triggered for some cool lighting as well as mutiple light exposure.

I'm SO in. I actually wanted to see if I could shoot up there anyway. How awesome.

So, a few questions...in the two hours beforehand, we would just be taking photos of the actors and also getting an idea of the inside for finding good spots?

Right on...! It's coming together nicely

As far as the two private hours, yup...both shooting and getting idea of spots...however we can do/go anywhere there...it's a big place. The staff will be there...as well as a couple of the hottie posse members....Alexa and Heather.

yeah!...will bring some extension cords as well...studio lights gotta be outta there once people start going though the houses I'm assuming. It's so kaotic I wouldn't have lights in there (OTHER than wireless camera strobes superclamped to the walls/ceilings/etc. That's all good if ya wanna do that instead of keeping the flash(s) on the camera.

This is a perfect opportunity for slow shutter flash sync and multiple flash pop. :)
