The Art and Business of Wedding Photography with Yvette Roman - December 8th

This class is designed to help those already confident with their photography skills but need the next step in becoming a successful wedding photographer. Specifically, it is designed for photographers who want to understand and explore both the art and business of wedding photography. Important topics will be covered such as how to build a portfolio, how to promote and market one's work, how to bid for a job and how to write contracts. The art of wedding photography is also explored such as the use of digital cameras, film cameras and formats, and when to use what for a specific effect. We will also explore how to deliver a presentation to a client and how to design an album.

Yvette Roman (www.yrphoto.com) graduated with a BFA in photography from Art Center College of Design in 1989. She began her career as a rock photographer, photographing such luminaries as Roy Orbison, Joni Mitchell, David Byrne and Timothy Leary. Since photographing her first wedding in 1996, Yvette has shot weddings from Los Angeles to Morocco. She has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in numerous publications including Grace Ormonde's Wedding Style Magazine, Inside Weddings, Angelino, Riviera, Elegant Bride and Town & Country. Yvette's numerous advertising and editorial clients include City of Hope, The Getty Museum, A&M Records, MCA Records, Capitol Records, Sony Music and Los Angeles Times Magazine.

Why is it everyone wants to be a wedding photographer? I can think of better and less stressful ways of making money with photography.

Wedding photography is where the majority of the cashola is... It's a huge, recurring, never ending source of good revenue. That's why people are interested in doing it.

Sorry... I found I made more money in the aviation industry than I ever did doing weddings and without the attendant hassles...

Unfortunatley, the end result of this is that market is saturated with cheap, incompetent, unskilled "wedding photographers" that are dragging down the industry. Go take a look at Craig's List sometime...

I am well aware of the market being over saturated but hey... thats free enterprise. nothing we can do about that.

the one thing we can do is do great work and let it speak for itself... the clients that want the good work will come... the ones that only want to pay $200 to have their wedding shot are probably not the type of clients I'm looking for to begin with so they can find someone on craigslist... hehe.
