Hi,
I intend to run a number of workshops on how to photograph hummingbirds in flight, using high speed flash techniques. 3 students per 4 hour afternoon/evening session will receive an hour tutorial on hummingbird natural history, high speed flash, and shooting guidelines. They will then spend an hour at each of 3 different stations - each with a different flash setup. One will be dedicated high speed flashes - Fotronix StopLight SL-80's, another will be Canon 580 series flashes (all in manual mode), and a third will be a mixture of other contemporary flash units (again, all in manual) to demonstrate how fantastic results can be achieved with a modicum of gear. I will also show some very exotic high speed flash equipment to any students who are interested. I used to run Fotronix, a high speed flash company, several years ago in North Carolina.
All you will need is a camera with a hotshoe, and the ability to focus at about 6 feet, with the longest lens you can manage. I can supply everything else, and you will leave with some nicely exposed hummer shots, (
with nicely exposed backgrounds!), a hummingbird feeder of the type that I use, a copy of the tutorial presentation, and an extensive resource list.
I will run these on an ad-hoc basis from June through September, and the charge will be $200 per student per session. Dates are entirely flexible. During the summer, I have upwards of 100 hummingbirds present at my property, and you can expect to photograph males and females of Rufous/Allens, Annas and Black Chinned hummingbirds. You may also see Costas, and if very lucky, the odd Calliope.
I have lectured extensively on high speed flash, given numerous workshops on hummingbird photography (including working with Joe McDonald) and love teaching all I know to others.
