Backup drive help please - 05-31-2009, 08:17 PM

I have a Netgear SC101 network drive with 2 Seagate 500 gig IDE in it. I know the SC101 was not a good choice, but it's too late now. I can't access the drive at all now and the green light on it flashes continuously indicating that no drive was found and it makes a scratching sound. I have reset it a couple of times and checked the cable connection inside to the drives, but no help. Any ideas? Thanks

Have you though of picking up a external drive case, pull the drives, and put them in the case and see if they can be read?

If the drive(s) are making a 'scratching' sound, then it's most likely the actuator has given up the ghost. Shut it down and consider a data recovery service. The more you mess with it, the more difficult recovery could be...

The problem is that the Netgear uses a proprietary files system and I don't know how to get windows to read it if I put the drives in another enclosure.

Windows will not read the NAS format. If you think it might be the enclosure you might try getting another enclosure and getting the data off of the current drives.

I had similar problems and was able to recover the data by doing this. I got rid of the NAS setup and went with Seagate firewire and now its giving me problems too.
