Crazy Memory Prices - 07-17-2009, 10:09 PM

Just got a new HP color laser printer at work and wanted to up the ram. The printer takes 2 sticks of 256mb each. HP's cost for 512mb - $719, with some retailers charging over $900.

A little research and I came up with 512mb from direct from Crucial - $34.

My boss told me i should be getting an Imac 24-inch soon, i already got the plan down, tear it up replacing internal drive with 300GB velociraptor then load up 8Gb of memory ... unfortunately, i now just learned that 8GB memory upgrade will cost me at least $729!, that's 3rd party solution and Apple wants more! That's just stupid, more than half of the whole unit price... WTF. I would be darn happy with $34 upgrade from Crucial :)

That doesn't sound right.

That price is right. Eventually I want to bump the RAM on my MBP from 4 to 8GB. That's $1000 upgrade from Apple. After market memory still goes for ~$700 today. Will wait out till 4GB DDR3 sticks come down in price.

cheers!

I was in a similar spot - wanted to add memory to my Dell 3110cn color laser. Popped the side off, saw a DDR2 SO-DIMM slot, looked on my desk at the two 1GB sticks I had removed from my MacBook Pro, and voila -- popped one in and it works like a champ. Gotta love it when you get lucky!

Chances are the ram is the same as the ram you get for a PC....pull a chip and do some research.
