Mac Files on NAS??? - 09-10-2009, 05:50 PM

I have question I hope someone can help me with.

I copied some files from my Mac onto a NAS drive.

I can open the folder on a windows machine and the files have been copied to the NAS.

When I go into Finder on the Mac and Open the folder on the NAS no files show up.

Can someone help me determine why?

What kind of format do you have on your NAS drive?

It is whatever it comes with.

It is a Raid Box so it has its own OS and I think it is a Linux system.

Just out of curiosity, what brand is it? I have a BUffalo Terastation NAS that I have had for a couple of years and have never had this problem...

You said your Mac is recognizing the drive exists just not reading it...

Just a wild guess but I would look into how the drives are formatted on your NAS. If they are NTFS I believe that is going to be your problem. With Fat32 you can read/write on mac and pc.

It is a Thecus 4100pro.

The Mac sees the RAID Box and will also read the folders and data that is already on the Box.

It seems that when I have the MAC add to a folder, it is the data that was added by the MAC that the MAC wont see after it copies it to the Box.

How long are the file names? According to a document that I found on the Thecus site, "Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X can not see files on the network with names made up
of over 32 characters." Perhaps thats the issue?

http://www.virtual-hideout.net/revie...ro/index.shtml

"*Note: I have been speaking to Thecus frequently about this. And they have a new firmware version in the works that they claim will fix the problem with OSX. However, OSX can not write to NTFS partitions without 3rd party add-ons (that are not always 100% reliable), and Windows can not deal with HFS+ formatted drives. Which leaves FAT32 as the only cross system compatible format."

Without looking too closely it looks like your drives are NTFS. Although this is for a different Thecus.

I don't think they are longer than 32, but I will check.

Thanks thats good info to know!

OK I have done a little more playing around and it seems that it is this one share on the device that is giving the trouble.

I can read and write to other shares and it works fine. But when I write a file to this particular share it writes it and them immediately it disappears from the finder window, as if it is being hidden for some reason. How do I go about checking to see if for some reason the items in this folder are marked to be hidden from finder???
