I started looking for an offsite backup solution. Carbonite has just about the perfect solution, except for one major flaw: speed (or lack thereof):

"Your first complete backup will take some time, but once your first backup is complete, updates to your backup usually take only a few minutes each day and are virtually unnoticeable.

Depending on your Internet connection speed and how long you stay connected to our servers, you should be able to back up 2-3GB per day with Carbonite. So, if you have 3GB of data on your computer, your initial backup will take about 24 hours. If you have 30GBs of data, your initial backup will take about 10 days. That assumes, however, that you're not using your computer for other work. Carbonite slows down when you're working on your computer so as not to interfere with your CPU or Internet speed. Therefore, if you use your computer 8 hours a day, your backup will go 33% slower."

So it will take me about 6 months for my initial backup of all my photos, plus if I want to back up the 8 GB card I just shot, that will take another 3 days.

No bueno. Why have a fiber connection with blazing upload speeds? I may as well be on dial up!

Does anyone know of a fairly economical solution that has decent speed?

I just use portable hard drives. Haven't really looked into online solutions but I would expect them all to be slow.

The ones I want to look at automatically upload changes to your source directories. Some of them will take it as fast as you can send it. I can upload a GB to my server in Ohio in 18 minutes via FIOS.

Problem is, one of the ones I talked to wanted 45 cents ber GB per month. If I upload 1 TB of files, that's $450 per month. Ouch.

I haven't started yet... but this might be just the ticket for you as well. You do need a friend though:
