Cannot get MBPro to boot 64bit. - 10-22-2009, 09:45 PM

Anyone have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and cannot get it to boot in 64bit? Mine is compatible, I have tried the 6 and 4 keys/reboot, I have tried the NVRAM force and the .plist hacks to force it. NONE WORK. It shows that it is "set to boot in x64", but when it boots, it's the 32bit kernel! I cannot figure the darn thing out!!! Driving me nuts!

It's a fairly new MBP 2.4 Ghz Core2Duo with 4GB RAM... All the specs show that it is compatible with 64bit mode. It just will not work.

I believe I have the same machine as you and my kernel_task also comes up as Kind:Intel without the (64 bit) behind it. I'll have to look into it also. If you find an answer, please post. Thanks!

Andrew, i have no problem booting in 64 bit with MBP, i think we have the same model. Unfortunately, that machine runs vmware serves as web development server for my work and even latest build Fusion 2.0.6 make no mention of optional 64 bit Snow Leopard kernel support, fusion is not booting if forced to run in Kernel 64. Both my Mac pro and MBP are running in 32 bits and so are millions others OSX users, as all SL machines, except ones that's running Xserve are defaulted to 32-bit.

Sorry I don't have anything to add.
What is booting in 64-bit good for? Why would you use that instead of normal 32?

Good reading below and detail to check/enable 64-bit kernel.

Yep... My MBP is on the compatible list and even running the command line to verify shows that it's x64... Just doesn't work. I use VMWare as well... Waiting for the new release (very soon)....

Oh well.. I am not going to worry about it. I just hate that I cannot get it to work when it should.

Jusselin

So 64 bit is faster than 32 bit? Why didn't you say so!?

I'm going to fiddle with this some more tonight and see what I can come up with. I've now tried all the methods also. Still no joy. I don't have VMware, but I do have Parallels installed. I'm going to take a look at the boot log and see if it's even recognizing the kernel boot flag. Very interesting. Going to look at my Mac Pro also...

It's nice that you could get it working. I've been planning to upgrade to the latest Fusion, but it looks difficult and time consuming. Daunting, if you will. Is it easy?

I don't know about being the new "Vista" though...that's a little harsh
I can't really complain about the speed increase, and freeing up lots of memory. Not to mention the sweet snow leopard desktop background...

Fusion is practically painless when it comes to upgrade, i've done many versions' upgrade and never once had any issues. I once copied a straight Window's vmware version (workstation) partitioned (running w2k8) and dump it on Mac's fusion and magically... it worked! what a amazing product!! Parallel no more since ...

I used the instructions on this page: http://netkas.org/?p=189 to get my MacBook Pro 3,1 to boot full 64bit including the airport driver. Enjoy!
