I bought a 22" inch Acer for $169. I don't mind having a low end monitor.

I thought you tried another monitor with the same results? I had the same issue last year. I had an NVIDIA video card that upon close inspection had blown a capacitor. I bought a new video card, and voila, back in business.

I had a Gateway 24" LCD monitor that was great until it stopped working. I replaced it with a cheap 24" Samsung that I am not pleased with at all. Any movement of my head changes the apparent brightness of the monitor -- up or down, left or right.

I just disconnected my Dell monitor with DVI connection which is probably 3 years old from my older custom built desktop and when I connected it back I get green lights but as it's booting it switches to the amber lights. I thought I'd try booting in VGA mode (I'll need a VGA connection from computer to monitor) then make sure I have the latest drivers for my video card then try the DVI connection again. I've disconnected several times but this is the first time this has happened.

Do you get the Windoze splash screen upon startup then the screen goes black? Or is it black from first power up?

Hello,

I'm a little bit confused about your testing procedure for this issue.

In the very first post you mentioned an "old monitor" that was used for testing.

As I understand it, you have 2 different monitors and 2 different computers. is this correct?

Can you fill out this table?

---- legend ----
Original computer : 1-yr old Dell system
Original monitor : monitor that came with 1-yr old Dell system
Old computer : older, custom-built computer
Old monitor : monitor that was used with custom built computer
----

Original computer with original monitor : < boot results >
Original computer with old monitor : < boot results >
Old compter with original monitor : < boot results >
Old computer with old monitor : < boot results >

Yes, I see the splash screen and it goes black before the boot is complete.

Sorry.
I do have two computers. One is a Dell laptop running Vista business and I am having no problems with it.
I only have one computer that just started having a problem. It's an older computer and I don't use it anymore for photo editing because it's too slow. It's fine for CAD work though. This older computer is not built by Dell, the only Dell product is the monitor. I've always had it hooked up on DVI to the video card. The boot appears normal then all of a sudden the screen goes black. I don't know if windows finish loading or not. I may take the CPU and the monitor to a shop and see if it works on another machine.

It really needs to be replaced but it has been usable for CAD work and I can edit photos on my laptop for now.

Update:
Reinstalling the video drivers while in vga mode solved my problem. Thank goodness!
