Well, it seems I have my opinion and you have yours.

Don,
What us your other PC's specs? Brand, processor speed, RAM and operating system? You may not even need a new one?

yeah you can face lift it with more ram, larger processor(depending on chipset) and more space with another HD.

I can say with a fair amount of confidence that most home-builds are doomed to suffer from instability problems because the builder doesn't do their research on inter-component dependencies and conflicts. You may be the -exception- to that rule. -shrug-

for $470 the machine isn't a bad deal.

I was thinking a reformat/re install the OS and maybe more RAM.

Wow!!! That is an above average PC. Do you want to buy a new PC? If not, as helpful as you are on the forum I am sure someone could check it out for you to see if it is software related. Dell has a great utility to set it back to factory and I am almost certain you would be happy. Overtime the OS starts to slow down your performance. I know you have your pics backed up so all you would have to do is reinstall Lightroom and Photoshop after the reformat utility.

Don,
+1 on building from scratch....Too bad you don't live near me here in Ohio. You buy the parts and I'd put it together for your for free. Just a little tutoring on your part to equal things out. Good luck though!

IMO, HP isn't buying the parts because of their "inter-component dependencies and conflicts(or lack there of)" it is because they are CHEAP. Nothing more nothing less. The listed computer is there to fit a price point not a quality niche.
Hello again,

This thread piqued my interest for a number of reasons. First, I used to work at HP when I first graduated from college, but the company has changed a lot since I worked there and I would be disappointed if the old "engineering" company I worked for had lost its way. Secondly, being a hardware engineer myself, I was concerned that I might be spreading mis-information inadvertently.

So, I contacted one of my old co-workers at Hewlett Packard and asked him this question. This is not a person in the marketing or public relations department, this is a hardware engineer. Here is his reply :

<name removed>,

I need to settle a discussion. My assertion is that "Hewlett Packard computers are regression tested to make sure that the components all work together and don't produce products with inter-component conflicts". My opponent says "HP chooses computer components based on price and could care less if they work together".

Can you find out if HP regression tests their computer components as part of their component shopping/choosing process?

Thanks,

Dave

What's up dave! hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

Oh yes, hp cares if stuff works together. We have a really big pain in the ass process of qualifying parts (includes regression) for our products. Only after that process can we even consider using a part for one of our systems.

It is fair to mention that we do care deeply about part cost. We like to qualify more than one supplier for a particular part so we can have them duke it out for our business by offering the lowest possible price ... ahhhh capitalism.

Let me know if you need anything else,

Here's another one I found for $800.00. It is new and not a refurb. It has Intel processor and is faster, but I can't find all the spec on it. The details were not listed. I'm looking for the most bang for my bucks.

Gateway DX4831-05 Desktop PC Intel Core i5 650 3.20GHz, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce G310, Windows 7 Home Premium x64 - PT.GAJ02.013

Don't even get me started about HP. Some brief highlights from my encounter from hell: 1st computer, bad out of the box. Returned for a second, this one with a bad mother board finally confirmed by a level "whatever" tech after months of customer service hell. One HP person sharing with me, the customer, that another did not follow company procedure and guess what, he was wrong as well. Telling me they will ship to Irving for repair, sending packing slip for Jeffersonville, IN instead. Failing to tell me I could simply have it repaired where I bought it (an authorized HP repair center). After all this, the repair of the 2nd machine proved unsuccessful. 3 strikes and the retailer with no argument ("yeah, we had problems with those") swapped it out for a Gateway which has served me well. Maybe I was unlucky, but that doesn't account for the poor customer service and I don't care, we all hate our jobs attitude I received in abundance. YMMV.

SIde by side the first one looks better....faster HD and better chipset.

Once again, parts chosen to fit the price. A 5400 RPM drive??? Really?

Mobo is decent, Pegtraon is a division of ASUS for OEM parts.
