full blown meltdown!! - 05-27-2010, 11:54 AM

As if I'm not busy enough, I finally had to break down and get a new desktop. So yesterday I thought I had my files transferred from my laptop to the desktop via and external drive. It did transfer files, but it seems to have "lost" all the files that were on the external drive....i.e. all my files from 2009-2010 that have been processed. Yes I do have them backed up, but the thought of processing again right now, makes my head spin!! I'm thinking/hoping I'm missing something somewhere!!!! When I plub in the external drive to either computer, it shows there is NOTHING on the external drive.....PLEASE, Please tell me the files are there somewhere and I don't have to use rescue program...

That blows. If you can't see anything, your only real option is to use recovery software. Try PC Inspector File Recovery. It's freeware.

Just be careful to not do more damage.

If you get in a bind, I can help you recover the files and copy them to a second external drive.

well..It's interesting...the on light on the external driver used to "flow" now it just stays on. I thought about saving something to see if it would make the on light do the same thing, but i don't want to make matters worse. I think I need to go drink the day away outside by the pool..there was almost 1 TB worth of files on that blankety blank drive...

Don't write to it again until you have recovered the files. When using the recovery software, be sure to save the files to a different drive. Otherwise, you'll be totally screwed.

photo rescue being used. "error can't open the input drive: the system cannot find the file specified" (the external drive)????

don't know how computer savvy you are...

but my mom had an external drive "die" and even though the lights were on, no one was home inside.

being a computer guy i took apart the enclosure and saw it was just a regular ide hard drive (was a few years back) and just hooked it up as a internal hard drive on my desktop and was able to copy everything off.

if the interface that goes between your computer and the hard drive fried or whatever, then no recovery software will be able to help.

if you were up here in dallas i'd be glad to help.

Which OS are you using? BTW, if you need help, let me know. We live on the NE side of H-town also (Humble/Fall Creek).

When you boot there is prob a slash screen, hit F1 to go into the BIOS.
under boot devices, select the hard drive not the cd rom.
