xp and 7 on the two desktops hooked up directly to the router.
xp on the wireless laptop...which does get internet.

I'm tempted to try the new router sitting in the box. If I took off the wrapper and tried it, I'd be afraid they wouldn't take it back...then I'd be out $100...then I'd still be unhappy!!!!!1

are you sure you're picking up your router wirelessly and not a neighbor's?
if so, bad nic port on computer?
it's obviously not the modem...

I'd plug the modem directly into the computer to see if you can connect...but only long enough to check it...

but let those that know better answer first, i only know enough to be dangerous...

p.

ps: you posted while I was writing...who'd you get the router from? maybe someone has delt with them before...

bought the router brand new...had it for a few (maybe too many!!) years. I know for sure we are attempting to hook up to our router.

I can hook the modem directly into the computer and it works fine. another reason to make me believe it is the router.

PS..I too know only enough to be dangerous...dangerously bad at screwing things up!!!!!!!!!

yeah, if you connect directly to computer, I would guess router too...and if the new one is that old then don't think anyone will take it back, even brand new in the box...

you're going to need someone to come over and troubleshoot. trying to do so with so many variables, so many unknowns, no visibility into the router settings, and so many potential fixes is extremely difficult to do through laggy forum posts..

Put your router back to default settings and start from square 1, with one computer. Look up your router's manual online to figure out how to put it back to default settings. Once you get one computer connected, you can go from there. Jumping right in with 4 computers, 2 of which are wireless, is just too many variables at once.

but why would the two wireless computers work when the router is connected and the two desktops not work?? I KNOW they are running off the router...and have been. They did run a new cable line today, but I can't imagine that would have anything to do with it..

BTW..the new router...is NEw..just bought it two days ago. The old router is the linksys G...

I'm not sure what the situation is in your house. All I can help you with is a systematic way to debug the problem. The first step is to eliminate variables and start from the beginning with as few components as possible. Change one thing at a time and check at each step.

1) plug modem directly to computer -- internet yes/no?
2) reset router, plug modem to router, plug computer to router -- internet yes/no?

etc.

when the desktops are hooked directly to the modem, they work. wireless units do not.
when desktops are hooked up to modem via router, desktops do not work (they are wired directly) but wireless units in the house work.

There are various sources that could cause this situation. The large majority of them are in your router and are probably settings. The quickest way to debug your problem is to reset the router to factory defaults and try to get internet to -one- of your desktops using the users manual for the router. Forget about the wireless laptops for now, it's only confusing the situation. I'm not sure how else to say this.

there is a switch on a lot of routers that turns on/off "access point", I assume this is turning on/off the wireless? If I am wrong, could this be the problem?

When you say "modem", what exactly is it? Is it a little black box that says Speedstream on it, or is it a larger beige box that says something like 2-Wire on it?
