Question Nikon Transfer... - 06-13-2010, 10:35 AM

Ok... on more question. Sorry. I'm making a big push to migrate files today and finish the switch to the new iMac.

Since I can stick the SD cards directly into my iMac, and 'import from disk' in LR, is there really any need for me to put the Nikon Transfer software on my computer? Doesn't LR automatically create a folder according to shoot date?

I'm not a LR user, but one of the things I like about nikon transfer is the ability to make up different exif profiles that you can customize per job.

I've never had Nikon Transfer installed, and I've downloaded a lot of photos taken with Nikons.

Yes. I know that I can download photos without it...

I guess I should rephrase my question. Is Nikon Transfer only a cataloging software, and if so, is it still needed since LR can import and catalog photos into individual folders?

What is the purpose of Transfer, and is its purpose negated by using LR?

As far as I'm aware, all Nikon Transfer does is download. I guess the question more is, is there anything LR or your other software doesn't do? If not, what's the worry? If so, then you should probably load Nikon Transfer and see if it does what's missing.

Nikon Transfer is just the downloader, with some options. ViewNX is the (rather limited) cataloging and editing software. LR3, well, is 3 lightyears ahead!

Thats what I meant. I have a habit of saying Nikon Transfer, since thats what the file is named on the hard drive.

I downloaded some more pictures last night from the memory card, and it seams that I dont really need it, since LR 2 catalogs according to shoot date under the file I specify.

As it turns out, I've learned that I was doubling my memory usage on the old computer by importing into LR and copying to another location!

Yeah, for me, I skip over the Nikon Transfer Software. Take up room anyways.

I go straight into Aperture 2 and I have fellow photogs that go straight to LR. Like TXhummer stated, these softwares are light years ahead of the Nikon Transfer and NX software.
