Anyone using this HP monitor for photo editing? - 06-16-2010, 01:29 PM

I am about to pull the cord on this, so let me know any thoughts if you have used it for photo editing:

HP / Hewlett-Packard | 27" Full HD Widescreen | NT188AA#ABA

If you know of a better monitor, give or take $50 to this price for the same size, give or take an inch (I like the 27 inch size), I am game for suggestions.

Thanks for any advice.

That's not an idea monitor for photo editing, it's a TN panel for starter.

The newest HP monitor is ZR-24, it's an IPS panel monitor and prices about the same. I'm using one next to my NEC 2690.

Yeah, when I asked the Other World Computing tech (another company I use a lot) about what adapter to get since these monitors have VGA, DVI and HDMI connections, they stated without hesitation to get the HDMI (I have a MB Pro) adapter.

Can you explain what TN and IPS mean? I am not an expert on monitors, but I do know that NEC and Lacie have some of the best. My price range is around $400 or less.

The short version, in general, IPS has higher color gamut, bit rate, wider viewing angle and more accurate color reproduction. While TN is built for gaming and entertainment with aggressive spec that's bad for photo editing. For instance, between those two; the viewing angle is 160 vs 178 and 92% sGRB color gamut vs 97%.

You probably don't want to hear how nice the NEC 3090WQXi is then :-)

I ended up with this one from HP:
HP / Hewlett-Packard | LP2475w 24" LCD | KD911A8#ABA | B&H

I spoke at length with the BH product expert and he was very helpful and explained the difference between gaming monitors and those best for photo editing. This is why I buy from BH, in addition to several other factors in their favor (free shipping through NAPP membership).

Thanks for all the input.

if i'm not mistaken, that's the one that ended up on my husband's desk. advice? calibrate immediately - and if you don't like it - send it back. i got mine directly from hp and that was my biggest mistake.

I am also getting one of these from Anthro (which makes the best office furniture in my opinion).

Anthro: Flat Panel Monitor Arm, Standard, LCD Arm
