no internet?? - 06-20-2010, 08:33 PM

so something happened to my kids computer...tried all kinds of things. Finally wiped the hard drive clean and am trying to start over. Now, we can't get the monitor on the normal size and still can't get an internet connection? Our internet provider said we were gettting internet to the computer (before I wiped the hard drive) but the computer was not "accepting" the connection. Any suggestions?

I second the driver issue..go to the manufacturer's site to their driver page ( on another computer of course) download the appropriate drivers, copy to thumb drive, install on the kid's puter..should be good from there.

If this is a retail machine (i.e. Dell, Gateway, etc.), then updated drivers for the video card, network card, etc. should be available on their site. Alternatively, if you still have the CD that included all of these drivers, use that to reinstall them.

I would never use the CD included. The reality is that the Driver CD's were mastered long time ago, then the product has transit and shelf time, by the time you get to use the CD, the driver version is obsolete and will cause more harm that good.

Download the drivers from the net, extract them to a cd/dvd/drive key and do it that way.

Do this first:

Hit start>Run
type "CMD"
at the dos prompt type "ipconfig/release"
then wait a moment it should say the adapters were released.
then type "ipconfig/renew"
you should see 3 sets of IP numbers

Then try the net.

Use a LAN and not a WLAN connection to finish up the reinstallation of the OS. This is a drastic measure to take, especially if you are starting with an older version of XP, or if you've changed any hardware on the computer. Reimaging a computer and getting everything to work as before is not a trivial thing, and should be done with some planning. Hard to tell what the issues are, but chances are that what was on the XP CD will need to be updated with new drivers and other things or configs to make your computer run well.

If it's not an especially brand-new machine, you might try booting a live-cd of Ubuntu and seeing if you can establish network connectivity that way. If you can, you at least know the network device itself is still functional. From there, you can also identify the appropriate chipsets of your wired and/or wireless network devices and proceed to get the latest drivers directly from the manufacturer (which 99% of the time are far more stable than the pre-packaged drivers).

Heck, I'd be tempted to just install Ubuntu especially since it's probably an older machine and is used a lot for the internet. I can recommend a lightweight Ubuntu derivative Peppermint | Linux OS. It's very fast and has all the extras that regular Ubuntu doesn't include and it should do nicely on as little as 256 MB of RAM. Simply install and go. : )
