I upgraded to a new computer and wanted to keep the old one for doing non-photo work. I bought a KVM switch, trendnet tk-207, and have it working, sort of...
problem is my old computer used PS/2 connection, my logitech wireless keyboard/mouse terminates in a usb/ps2 configuration and I have it hooked up with the adapter that converts the keyboard to usb. the cabling for the KVM is strictly USB and video. If I plug the cable into the keyboard adapter I still don't have a connection for the mouse. My new computer is strictly USB so there is no problem there. I like the wireless but not having it wouldn't be a deal killer, the keyboard/mouse on new comp are all usb and are the proper connection for the input to the KVM. I guess what I need is some adapter that would bring the ps/2 mouse and keyboard connections into one USB socket so the cable from the KVM will go into it..... Do I make any sense? | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

Thanks Rson, I am not sure if that will work or not, I saw those on Trendnets site. I took the wireless keyboard off the old comp, wasn't sure if usb keyboard/mouse would work. I had wrongly assumed that since the computer had ps/2 sockets that ONLY mouse/keyboard plugged in there would work. I plugged in a usb keyboard to an unsued socket and all worked fine. I have gotten it to work ok now as long as I am using usb. To use my wireless keyboard and mouse I would need to go from round ps/2 to usb. I will search for that. I was just having a hard time wrapping my mind around which side of the kvm to work on adapters and finding out the the old computer can work ok using USB only....hope everyone is thoroughly confused now.

I do lots of computer repair, I have an older kvm that is ps2 only. I have one of the adapters like the one listed above. It has worked perfectly in all instances. It should work just as well on the other side connecting your wireless kb to the kvm. I have not used the Synergy product, but I have in a couple of instances just used RDP to connect to one computer from another. Not exactly the same as using a kvm, but it does allow one to put the second computer where ever you want and not have to worry about a keyboard, mouse or display. As long as it's on your network you will have access to it. The usb adapter option is probably the easiest to implement, though.

Never heard of Synergy. So this is software, installed on each PC, instead of a hardware box?
If so, I don't see Win 7, anyone know if that is tested?

RDP/Remote Desktop Connection is probably an easier way to go. Not much configuration, no new software to install, and it is resident in Windows.

If going the remote route, VNC is the best free solution right now.

Yeah, I forgot about that little inconvenience. All my machines are xp pro, so it's not an issue unless I'm on a machine I've taken in to do work on. I stand corrected.

Are there any software versions that handle the V in KVM? Synergy says a future release may. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
